We were on vacation visiting some friends in Gilbert and we decided to give this place a try after reading the reviews here. I LOVED IT!!! I am a chocolate croissant junkie so I've tried them all over, the ones they have could be easily compared to those I had in Italy!!!The macaroons are amazing too, a little bit spendy... More

It was worth the one mile walk in 100 degree temps to visit this bakery. Breakfast was creative, healthy and filling, a rare combination. We only sampled one pastry each and those were exquisite. The macarons were very tempting and I will certainly try them when in Tempe again.

We've eaten here before but this time I wonder if something has changed. The first change in attitude was the huge sign on the door indicating that one couldn't bring outside food or drink into the store. This doesn't affect me in the fact that I don't bring outside food in. The way that it did affect me is that... More

This is a small neighborhood joint with good coffee, great baked goods and decent breakfast. We liked the baked goods most of all and took some of the convenient little gift boxes of their assorted cookies, cakes, etc. to pass along as hostess gifts. I had a breakfast 'French style' scrambled egg that was simple, understated, moist -done just exactly... More

The food here is amazing. Order the special and you won't be disappointed. Actually don't order the special because then they may run out before I get there which has happened. They locally source their grass fed beef from a family ranch in southern Arizona. Amazing things on the menu...award winning caramel macaroons. Order the caramel one, even if you... More

I've stopped by several times for Essence Bakery croissants and they are the best I've eaten, either here, in Paris or anywhere else. It's apparent that the baker/owner is a professional French pastry chef straight from Paris. These croissants melt in your mouth yet are dense and substantial enough to be really filling. I recommend the almond or chocolate croissants... More

I have eaten here before and thought the food was pretty good, but the focus of this post is the macarons. If you have never had a macaron, or tried an Essence macaron you are missing out on one of life's great pleasures. Add this to your foodie bucket list! For $3 you get one of the most delightful desserts... More

We stopped here on our way through town. It was a shock to find a fabulous French bakery on our trip through the desert. We thought the coffee was pretty good. I had the quiche, my husbnd had the hot cereal and our son had eggs and bacon. All were delicious. The fruit served on the side was all fresh... More

Who would have thought in the middle of the Sonoran Desert that you could find the most mouthwatering pastries, cookies, and croissants that can easily go toe-to-toe with the best pâtisserie in France -but you can! Essence Bakery is a little gem smack dab in the middle of Tempe, AZ. It's worth the trek across town just to get a... More

My ideal breakfast at Essence Bakery is a double latte, french scrambled eggs with toast and a pain au chocolat. Breakfast aside, the French macarons ("macaroons" are American, have coconut), these are french classic "macarons" - light meringue cookies with a filling. They are as good as the ones you can purchase in Paris.
