Caetano D'Costa encountered Chicken Cafreal in the early 80s. At the time, he was working in the kitchen of the Mandovi Hotel in Panjim, under the tutelage of a senior chef, Caridade Alfonso. Caetano D'costa's parents had a tiny tavern in a bylane of Saligao, selling cashew and palm feni distilled by a relative. His mother added homemade snacks to go along with drinks, and the little tavern immediately became a hit with the motorcycle-pilots of the region who operated a local taxi service on their bikes. They brought their customers in increasing numbers. In 1985, the then 24 year old Mr.D'Costa left his job at the Mandovi Hotel and the tavern turned into Florentine. On its menu was Chicken Cafreal. Today, this richly aromatic, long-marinated fried chicken that's smothered in a spicy, coriander- heavy sauce is ubiquitous on restaurant menus across the state and widely known across the world as a signature Goan dish. But in fact, until the 1970's, Chicken Cafreal was unknown in Goa.

Florentine is hard to spot and you can blink and miss it if your driving down to Calangute from Saligao via Chogm road. But you should definitely not miss it if your looking for some delicious Chicken Cafreal and authentic Goan fish or prawn curry. The place does not have any fancy ambience but the aroma of the chicken will... More

This place you should go to eat Chicken Cafreal from any part of Goa that you are staying. ( We went from Bogmallo which is about 60 kms). Don't look for ambiance or fancy service. just dig into the Chicken Cafreal which is served with local bread. Ask for some more gravy if you want. Don't order other dishes (... More

A restaurant on the Saligao to Calangute road which makes the best Chicken Cafreal in the whole of Goa. These people know the art of Cafreal making, and no other restaurant can match up with them for this particular dish.

This is a great value for money......cheap booze and food but doesnt compromise on the quality and taste. Must try are the chicken cafreal, prawn caldin and caramel custard. Avoid the chinese fare. Try going a little early for dinner and lunch as the place

superb well established Goan cuisine restaurant on the Porvorim Rd out of Calangute. The best place to sample Chicken Cafreal - it can be quite spicy hot

Now, don't expect Florentine to be a fancy restaurant - the huge gate and signs not withstanding. If you read the history on their website (yes), this place evolved from a small bar. There may be some parking issues, but you can park your vehicle on the main road and walk over. The place is clean, although there is no... More
