Pretty Good, Given Location & Lack of Competiion

We had a lunch and a dinner here. My mushroom and swiss Panini for lunch was very good and my wife enjoyed her burger. We both had Mexican for dinner. Enchiladas not brilliant but okay for an Anglo café in the middle of nowhere.

While the food is just ok, the ambiance makes up for it several fold. Birds fly by, folks from all over the world dine on Mexican burritos, for veggie burgers, or salads, and have espresso with truly inspired deserts like peach cobbler. All while sitting on token down chairs outside, served by a great young lady server who keeps the... More

I had lunch here two days in a row while staying at Rusty's RV ranch and birding Cave Creek. Their green chili burger is outstanding. My second lunch I had the grilled chicken sandwich with swiss cheese and bacon. It was EXCELLENT. It was a BIG chicken sandwich, enough so that lunch filled me up for the rest of the... More

DH and I had the dogs (2) with us, so we were lucky it was a beautiful day. We sat outside, among the sycamore trees and bird feeders with the pups on leash. We both decided to get a panini, so we split 1 of 2 different kinds. We ordered the swiss cheese and mushroom panini and the tomato with basil... More

On a recent trip to Tucson my husband & I took a detour to Portal for lunch. We usually take I-10 & make the mad dash to visit friends and family. This time we took the back roads, had a very leisurely drive across New Mexico and made the stop in Portal. I was surprised to find such a quirky... More

I've enjoyed many meals here--bkfst., lunch, supper, on several visits for about 20 years. Yes, the menu is limited. Yes the prices are more than you'd pay at Denny's (see any Denny's in town?). Just getting the supplies here is more expensive than for most places. Yes, it is small and basic, but that's the charm--still, it has some pluses--wine,... More

There is simply no other place to eat in Portal. During their busy times the restaurant can be crowded but they try mightily to please. I particularly like that when you are with a group you can order ahead making their service more efficient. The food, with a Mexican emphasis is good.

As folks have said, it is the only place to eat in Portal. So ratings shouldn't be compared to a "4" in more urban environments. It is simple in a sense, but I think that is what makes it taste so good. I do love subtle sauces and the like, but these are basic burgers. And very tasty! A little... More

quaint store with surprises like Himalayan salt, good beer, good wine, and chili cheese fritos.... seriously though, they have the little things you may have forgotten and a decent cafe when you dont feel like cooking or are tired of sandwiches.

This is the only place one can eat in Portal. Thank goodness the food is excellent. Very casual. Lots of birders.
