As folks have said, it is the only place to eat in Portal. So ratings shouldn't be compared to a "4" in more urban environments. It is simple in a sense, but I think that is what makes it taste so good. I do love subtle sauces and the like, but these are basic burgers. And very tasty! A little... More

quaint store with surprises like Himalayan salt, good beer, good wine, and chili cheese fritos.... seriously though, they have the little things you may have forgotten and a decent cafe when you dont feel like cooking or are tired of sandwiches.

This is the only place one can eat in Portal. Thank goodness the food is excellent. Very casual. Lots of birders.

Terrific friendly service, simple but delicious food, great place to eat - the cobblers are the best!

We've birded the Chiricahua's several times and usually stay at one of the cottages with kitchens and prepare our own meals. But this trip we ate one night at the Portal Store. My wife had the BLT, my son and I had the Santa Fe sandwich. All were very good. We all had the excellent peach cobbler. The prices in... More

We spent two weeks in and around the Rodeo/Portal area of New Mexico/Arizona in Mar/Apr of this year and had ate breakfast, lunch and supper at this restaurant several. Loved the small country feel of the cafe. Always good food and great service. Saw our first herd of Peccaries in the parking lot. Try the cobbler; blueberry, cherry & peach... More

The store was well stocked which is great since it is the ONLY one in town. The service was okay. The restaurant was average, yet better than what I had expected.

We spent five days at the lodge, the room was very clean and nice. The perfect location in the Chiricahuas, in the middle of a unique scenery and wildlife... People running the lodge and restaurant are extremely friendly and will do their best to help you or fit to your needs. Can't wait to go there again...

This was the third time the crew at the Portal Peak Lodge and Cafe have hosted my large group (40+) for a multi-day event. They provided meals on time that were tasty and filling. Special dietary needs were accommodated without complaint. Their remote location makes fresh veggies and fruit tough to come by but they do their best to make... More
