Traditional Argentine cafe

Four of us ate lunch here on a Friday afternoon. The bar is right on the square. People watching is one of the best things about the bar. we had steak sandwiches (lomito complitos). Very tasty and went well with the cold Cristal beer. As much as we liked the food and the ambiance, the service was awful. We had... More

Cafe is located across the road from Starbucks, which remain pretty much empty over the hour I was at Cafe Dorrego which was doing a constant tourist trade at lunch time. Quite nostalgic decor, a varied menu that enables you to eat according to your budget. Cheese toasted sandwhich which was actually 2 toasties and a coffee was 98 pesos.... More

Great little bar, unchanged inside for many years but that adds to the character. On the edge of a very busy square yet it's quite serene inside.

It must get thousands of tourists, it's atmospheric, the interior is what you might imagine a traditional coffee shop bar from the twenties to look like. it's not contrived, I suspect someone just knew they were onto a good thing by leaving it alone. Every wooden surface, wainscotting, tables etc have had the dark brown paint scratched off with the... More

A stop here, possibly on a late afternoon, is an experience you don't wanna miss, even if you don't like coffee or if you just don't want anything to drink or eat. This place enjoys what can be probably considered the most favourable position in San Telmo - right on the little central Dorrego Square - so you just can't... More

Really a great place to meet people and enjoy a good inexpensive wine. Great view over the square and activities. Staff is helpful and attentive.

Visited with our family with young kids. The service was friendly and good. The decor is very cool. We could have easily spent hours in there watching the square across the street.

Love the vintage decor and vintage (non-working) espresso machine. Really looks like it hasn't changed in a 100 yrs. Brasserie style. Good coffee, waiters in uniforms makes me think of Paris. Plus wonderful mini Italian almond cookies with your coffee!

Very busy on Sunday afternoon. There's a market going on in the plaza on weekends & Argentine Tango, too. The food was good, hamburger and fries. Other dishes look great as well. Definitely tourist on the weekends. Went back on Monday morning for coffee, same waiter. Very quiet.

Staying in San Telmo

Neighborhood Profile
San Telmo
Characterized by cobblestones and narrow streets, San Telmo is defined by the tango, the dance that made Buenos Aires world-famous. Tango is a fusion of many different cultures: a true child of immigration, much like the city itself. Nowadays, it comes alive after dark in the milongas (dance parties) attended by both locals and visitors alike, who dance until the wee hours of the morning. During the day, the antique shops and classic cafés and bars around Plaza Dorrego dominate the scene. The emblematic Bar Plaza Dorrego, with its green awnings, checkered tile floors, and wooden interiors, takes you back in time the moment you step inside. For true porteño traditions, San Telmo is the place to be.
