Makes you feel like you're in the 1920's

Great spot to grab a coffee and watch the world go by on the Plaza right outside. The coffee is great and the service is solid. Definitely has some good character and is a fun stop.

Very busy on Sunday afternoon. There's a market going on in the plaza on weekends & Argentine Tango, too. The food was good, hamburger and fries. Other dishes look great as well. Definitely tourist on the weekends. Went back on Monday morning for coffee, same waiter. Very quiet.

We stopped in at this attractive old bar for cappuccinos and a snack. Our cappuccinos were listed as 40 pesos on the menu. We ordered a cheese plate to go with that (for 48 pesos). We got a saucer with a small pile of cheese cubes - no bread or crackers - just a tiny plate of cheese cubes. Our... More

When I visited I was in the mood for something light pre-tango class. And my bowl of tomatoes, glass of lemonade and a cortado hit the spot perfectly. The place has a strong atmosphere of faded grandeur - but that's rather the point. The staff were kind and relaxed in the face of my prolific photo taking. It was a... More

We came here for lunch and it is right in the middle of the market. Lots of tourists, but also some locals. Considering how crazy busy it was, the service was reasonable and the waiter had a nice sense of humor. It was a convenient, fairly charming place with air conditioning......for lunch. The sandwiches were good.

Terrible. Staff snotty unfriendly and unhelpful. Nothing we wanted to eat from menu seemed available. Trading on the back of an old building which looks quaint and might have atmosphere if the staff were vaguely interested in their customers. I'd find somewhere else to go.

Bar Dorrego was a quick pitstop for us while we were strolling around the San Telmo Sunday flea market (which I highly recommend). We stopped in to have a coffee, and some medialunas, which were all delicious. While its probably not the best coffee in the world, in decor on the inside really made up for it. Super old decor... This is the iconic cafe where Borges and Sabato met to drink together despite their political differences, but because of their literary genius. There's a very famous picture of both in table talking above a suggestive chess-like floor. Pros: * Friendly staff * great food

Reminds me bit of some bars in The French Quarter of New Orleans. Wooden floors and old decor. Maybe a bit like the Napoleon Bar in NO. Very busy on a Sunday when the Antiques Fair is on and a good place to watch the frenzied shoppers duck and dive past all the street vendors. A bit of fun and... More

Staying in San Telmo

Neighborhood Profile
San Telmo
Characterized by cobblestones and narrow streets, San Telmo is defined by the tango, the dance that made Buenos Aires world-famous. Tango is a fusion of many different cultures: a true child of immigration, much like the city itself. Nowadays, it comes alive after dark in the milongas (dance parties) attended by both locals and visitors alike, who dance until the wee hours of the morning. During the day, the antique shops and classic cafés and bars around Plaza Dorrego dominate the scene. The emblematic Bar Plaza Dorrego, with its green awnings, checkered tile floors, and wooden interiors, takes you back in time the moment you step inside. For true porteño traditions, San Telmo is the place to be.
