The food was good. Abundant portions with a real Catalonian flavour. The Restaurant is located inside the Margarita Xirgu Theater in the old colonial district of San Telmo. The building dates back to 1886 and was (and is) the Catalonian Community Building. The service was superb, they even had gluten free bread. The tapas we tried were excellent (mushrooms and... More

We came to this restaurant because it got great reviews. When we arrived at approximately 9pm (normal dinnertime here) there was only one other party seated in the restaurant. The wine was very, very good, as was the bread and tapenade. We only ordered two tapas and the Valencia paella (paella with chicken, pork, rabbit and snails). I tried the... More

Great variety of Fish and Seafood with a broad and well priced wine list. Renown for its suckling pig, you don't go wrong with other delightful preparations of well known Spanish fare. Service is exceptional and what you would expect from an historic venue. Come to enjoy the architecture as well. In the Spanish style, when you order langostinos they... More

Well, I should start with my expectations - having seen a friend's photos of a whole suckling pig and an overly positive review in Pick Up the Fork, a famous Buenos Aires food blog, I had to investigate for myself when my favorite Spanish-expat friend was in town for the week. I left confused... and hungry. I'll go chronologically -... More

The suckling pig as well as the fish of the day were outstanding. Huge portions and cooked very simple, like the Argentinians like it. We've been there twice in our week in BA and enjoyed the waiters as much as the location, esp. the tiles on the wall. The place fills up after 10pm, like most places in South America.... More

Big portions, nice attention, variety of dishes... Ideal for special occasions, and located in a popular neighbourhood like San Telmo. As many other reviewers say, the pig is probably the best in town: it's so tender that the chef comes out to "carved/cut" with... plates! Don't miss it, and don't forget to order "natillas" as dessert!

The Casal, like so many nice restaurants in Buenos Aires, opens at 9:00. The appetizers were special (grilled assorted mushrooms, shrimp boiling in oil pots) and the salads excellent. We did try the pig, but it was not great as we only ordered a fourth. It would be better ordered whole and split among four! Prices were middle of the... More

We ate at Casal de Catalunya while in BA and it came highly recommended. Evidently it is famous for its whole roasted suckling pig so we were excited for the adventure. Unfortunately the horrible service made the dinner a bust. We went on a Wednesday evening at 9 pm, there were 3 other tables occupied. Although we had made reservations,... More

Staying in San Telmo

Neighborhood Profile
San Telmo
Characterized by cobblestones and narrow streets, San Telmo is defined by the tango, the dance that made Buenos Aires world-famous. Tango is a fusion of many different cultures: a true child of immigration, much like the city itself. Nowadays, it comes alive after dark in the milongas (dance parties) attended by both locals and visitors alike, who dance until the wee hours of the morning. During the day, the antique shops and classic cafés and bars around Plaza Dorrego dominate the scene. The emblematic Bar Plaza Dorrego, with its green awnings, checkered tile floors, and wooden interiors, takes you back in time the moment you step inside. For true porteño traditions, San Telmo is the place to be.
