De Volkskombuis is located in the beautiful town of Stellenbosch. It provides a relaxed yet elegant atmosphere perfect for dinner with friends or going on a date. Their menu provides a wide variety of traditional South African dishes linked to Stellenbosch and the Western Cape. They also have a good wine list which mostly focusses on the farms in and... More

Had a really great meal at this child-friendly though not completely casual restaurant. We were seated in a slightly secluded area so that the baby would not disturb other guests. Amazing pork belly. Service was excellent

I have eaten all over the world, and consider myself a good cook. Quite simply, this was the worst food I have ever eaten EVER. The food tasted of being cooked days in advance, and they could not even warm it up competently as it was mostly burnt and/or dried out. I had the duck with pancake - dry, stringy... More

We have eaten in South Africa for 60 years and know something about African food dishes. What we were served was a great disappointment. The babotie was an abomination tasteless savoury mince an insult to South African food. The rest of the platter was obviously cooked on a different day as the rice had hard grains mixed in and the... The food is freshly cooked and excellent value for money. Service good but not intrusive. A little off the beaten track but worth seeking out.

The restaurant is billed as having traditional food. We found it absolutely indigestible. Combined with the slow slow slow service, we left after one course. During our meal the waitress spilled a glass of red wine on the wooden floor right next to our table. The mess was still there untouched, when we left half an hour later. Best avoided.

We took three guests to De Volkskombuis for lunch for a special occasion. The ambiance is great and it was the perfect venue to escape from the Cape heatwave. But there the positive part ends. I ordered the duck, as it is one of my favourite dishes. It was a huge portion, but the thigh had an unappetising bitter taste.... More

Possibly 10 or more years ago I was recommended a restaurant in Stellenbosch where I could get my favourite dish, Bobotie. On subsequent visits to the wine region I was unable to find it and could not recollect the name. A winemaker in Stellenbosch recommended the Volkskombuis for Bobotie this week and on arrival it was THE Restaurant. Bliss! The... More
