Description: Since 2002 hundreds of coffee devotees have trooped through the Lemon Tree...
Since 2002 hundreds of coffee devotees have trooped through the Lemon Tree doors every day to enjoy the amazing cappuccino. For the second time in three years a survey of around 350 restaurants in KwaZulu-Natal rated LEMON TREE’s cappuccino one of the province’s 20 BEST. This accolade was achieved in the definitive 2010/11 and 2012/13 Sunday Tribune Cafe Society Awards. The international hospitality monitor, TripAdvisor recognised Lemon Tree Bistro with its 2013 Certificate of Excellence. This prestigious award places the restaurant in the top-performing 10% of all businesses worldwide on TripAdvisor, and indicates businesses that consistently earn high ratings from TripAdvisor travellers. The hospitality and catering team, guided by owners Huck and Elsabe Orban, has taken what was essentially a coffee shop with a Continental slant to the level where it is one of the best recognised country restaurants in South Africa. Not only is it listed on several international country travel guides as a "Must Visit!" - amongst which the popular Lonely Planet - but it also serves as destination for both foodies and coffee aficionados. Its easy-dining, bistro menu to which special features like Venison Pie, de-boned Rainbow Trout, the incomparable Kudu Fillet and the famous pistachio-crusted Lamb Cutlets have been added, ensures that everyone's taste from essential to eclectic, is catered for. Besides the crisp croissants, baked on the premises every day, the Lemon Tree will serve you the most memorable Prawn Pasta, Prego Roll and hand crafted Toasted Sandwich you have ever had. Finish that off with the oh-so-moreish Beetroot Cake and a cappuccino and you'll be back for more.... time and again. When you walk through the door you enter the Lemon Tree's wonderful world of goodies... an interesting selection of books - both old and new, a range of branded and house coffees, brewing and cookery requisites and a deli filled with a delightful range of wines, imported biscuits, chocolates, jams and condiments. See you there...

Filter coffee at R27 a cup is not the cheapest I have ever come across. I queried this with the owners and they said that the prices are comparable to coffee prices on Durban. Filter coffee in Dirban will set you back on average R15. They got pretty upset with me when I pointed this out and I have not... More

I have been in the hospitality industry as a Food and Beverage consultant for many years, and whenever we are in the area we always pop in. Yes, I have had better fare, I have had better service, but I have never been disappointed at the Lemon Tree. It remains above average in my estimation, and most definitely at the... More

Thank you, Dave C for your "insider" view and frank review of our bistro. Being of the industry you are sensitive to the nuances, for lack of a better word, of running a restaurant in the country and we think you've got it spot-on! As you know, culinary specialization in a small town like Underberg is suicidal and by offering... More

Most definitely they worst chicken mayo sandwich I have even tasted. Coffee was also. I will not go back there.

We never offer a flippant response to a genuine review of our restaurant. We'll make an exception. Because your take on our chicken mayo sandwich was abrupt, our riposte is simply, "Your taste buds clearly were on strike on 25 May. We too prefer if you never return". More

The Lemon Tree does really great coffee. They also have a reasonably extensive menu, which does many things right, although it isn't necessarily the most ambitious in terms of selection. We made two stops, once for breakfast and one for dinner, and on both occasions they offered superior food and drink. The interior is well put together, the service is... More

A definate must for the seconders that have an early start for sani2c. The cuppacino and breakfast makes getting up early all the more worthwhile. The ambience is lovely and the food is fabulous. Highly recommended for a good start to your day

What would sani2c contestants do without their seconds? And how lonely Lemon Tree Bistro would be without sani2c seconders! The three-day event is so important not only for the economy of our village but also for the fantastic vibe and the special memories. Thank you for your glowing review. We were equally enamoured with your company and we hope to... More

From a restaurant background I can easily say that this is without a doubt the best coffee and food spot in the southern berg. Great atmosphere and always friendly staff and management. It's a regular stop for us.

We wandered into this venue for afternoon tea and cakes. We were not disappointed. Very friendly staff and patrons including the locals. Good ambiance here with efficient service. Nice selection on the menu. Very chilled. One of the better places for a late afternoon snack.

We're quite surprised - and mollified - Chriswhile, that we ended with a three-star rating because you appear to have had a thoroughly unpleasant experience. We apologise for not being up to our usual standard at the time of your visit. In our defense though, we must say that you planned your dinner at the most awkward time possible for... More
