Description: Since 2002 hundreds of coffee devotees have trooped through the Lemon Tree...
Since 2002 hundreds of coffee devotees have trooped through the Lemon Tree doors every day to enjoy the amazing cappuccino. For the second time in three years a survey of around 350 restaurants in KwaZulu-Natal rated LEMON TREE’s cappuccino one of the province’s 20 BEST. This accolade was achieved in the definitive 2010/11 and 2012/13 Sunday Tribune Cafe Society Awards. The international hospitality monitor, TripAdvisor recognised Lemon Tree Bistro with its 2013 Certificate of Excellence. This prestigious award places the restaurant in the top-performing 10% of all businesses worldwide on TripAdvisor, and indicates businesses that consistently earn high ratings from TripAdvisor travellers. The hospitality and catering team, guided by owners Huck and Elsabe Orban, has taken what was essentially a coffee shop with a Continental slant to the level where it is one of the best recognised country restaurants in South Africa. Not only is it listed on several international country travel guides as a "Must Visit!" - amongst which the popular Lonely Planet - but it also serves as destination for both foodies and coffee aficionados. Its easy-dining, bistro menu to which special features like Venison Pie, de-boned Rainbow Trout, the incomparable Kudu Fillet and the famous pistachio-crusted Lamb Cutlets have been added, ensures that everyone's taste from essential to eclectic, is catered for. Besides the crisp croissants, baked on the premises every day, the Lemon Tree will serve you the most memorable Prawn Pasta, Prego Roll and hand crafted Toasted Sandwich you have ever had. Finish that off with the oh-so-moreish Beetroot Cake and a cappuccino and you'll be back for more.... time and again. When you walk through the door you enter the Lemon Tree's wonderful world of goodies... an interesting selection of books - both old and new, a range of branded and house coffees, brewing and cookery requisites and a deli filled with a delightful range of wines, imported biscuits, chocolates, jams and condiments. See you there...

Friendly staff and great cuisine.

I visited the Lemon Tree to find a venue I could have a coffee and attend to my business emails. The staff are friendly and accommodating. They have free internet and I was able to get a lot of work done while enjoying great meals and excellent cappuccinos. Next time I'm in Underberg I'll be... read more

MikeJ1508, you make us proud to be restaurateurs. Your review covers every element of modern restaurateuring and the fact that you ticked everyone for us is a huge compliment. I must say, watching you tapping happily away at the computer keyes interspersed with a coffee here and there made us happy to be around you. I just get the feeling... More

...there we go Pole-Pole-Express. That's what the Lemon Tree is all about. Making hungry people full with some of the heartiest food on the planet. And if that means staying open late at night AND doing so through load shedding, then you've come to the right place. Our evening team is always obliging and go the extra mile to ensure... More

I had the toasted chicken mayo sandwich on seeded bread today. It comes with chips or a salad. I chose the salad and I was so happy I made that choice. The really fresh sandwich was really good too, with a lot of chicken mayo. Truly divine!

Thank you GailLuiz24, for your glowing review of our Bistro and especially for appreciating the Toasted Chicken Mayo sandwich. It is probably the most popular toastie in the world and many diners have their favourite style. Ours, as you so well described is a little different. Presented on a handmade seed bread and the pulled chicken dressed with the very... More

Great coffee, and hot chocolate according to my daughter, we unfortunately did not eat anything as we had just had breakfast at Umzimkulu River Lodge but from what I saw around me meals look very good as well. Burgers were large and looked very tasty.

...and Richard A, wait until you see our pizza. Its LOW GI and crisp, healthy base makes it both delicious and healthy. Nice combo, isn't it? But, we must be thankful for small favours and we are elated to hear that your daughter found the hot chocolate to her taste and you enjoyed the coffee. We enjoyed and always appreciate... More

The owner Mary Jane is very welcoming and helpful. She answered the silliest of my numerous questions, made me feel at home and served excellent breakfast and coffee herself. Do not miss this place while in town.

Isn't Mary Jane just a doll? And when you're in her good books, she'll do the earth for you. Thank you bmassand, for stopping for breakfast and encouraging other diners to pay us a visit with your positive review. Mary Jane'll be waiting with her eternal smile and friendly manner. We trust you enjoyed your South African visit. More

We stopped over for tea and cake after our berg holiday. The cakes were deli and the portion generous/huge. The service was a bit slow but staff were pleasant. There is a lovely atmosphere and it's obviously popular with locals. Worth a visit

We were introduced to the Lemon Tree by local friends and have had as many lunches as we could here during our stay (at least three). Our friends who introduced you to the Lemon Tree have done us the greatest service. Every time you walked into our space a zesty serenity settled on the place. Nothing pleases us more, Marihanda T than keeping the kitchen operational a little later than usual to prepare a good plate of food for a friendly and appreciative couple like you. We trust your visit to Himeville and the onward journey to Johannesburg were both enjoyable and that you will consider a return visit to the lovely hills of Underberg. More

This Bistro has everything so be successful. Great location, homely setting, and friendly waiters. Unfortunately, the manager interferes with the staff. On our visit, I specifically requested my steak to be well-done. The friendly waitress instructed the chef accordingly. Upon hearing the instruction, the manager told the chef not to make the steak according to my liking because that is... More

Grazie, Mario1547 for your frank review. I discussed your comments in detail with our evening manager, Justin and he distinctly remembers the occasion of your visit. To prevent potential diners getting erroneous information, we need to set the record straight. You did not order "steak". Your order was for our popular venison dish, the KUDU LOIN. And you did indeed... More
