Great vibe, good food

Great location, right at Vilakazi Street in Orlando West, Soweto, it is a walking distance to the Nelson Mandela House and an 8 minute walk will take you to the Hector Pieterson Museum on Kumalo Street. Sakhumzi offers a variety of local food and local as well as international beverage; it was a... read more

Food (very South-African! :)) was okay, nothing extraordinary but not bad either. Their prices are very cheap, so what we expected is what we got. It is a place we would recommend if you're visiting Vilakazi St.

The tour guides eat free when they bring you here. That should tell you what you need to know. This is a one-price buffet meal with home-style cooking. It's a good way to taste some of the dishes favored by black South Africans, but it is not fine food by any means. It's filling. It's convenient. It's plentiful. It's across... More

An organised stop on a tour of SOWETO, we were surprised by the touristic nature, but this is how they can bring money into the area. The food is buffet, and of a reasonably standard for mass catering, there were a number of choices which made it acceptable to most. The lunch is not massively expensive really To ensure that... Service is okay. Food is okay. Probably the best in the area, as it caters to tourists. Go somewhere else if you want authentic Soweto.

Situated right next to the Nelson Mandela house, the Tutu house, and the Hector Peterson memorial museum is Sakhumzi. The restaurant is gigantic, with two outdoor seating areas and two indoor for smokers/non-smokers. Pricing is outrageous for the quality at 140 rand per person. It is buffet style, with 3-4 meats, several types of grits, pap, collards, yams, chakalaka and... More

Cheap by Australian standards but expensive compared to other places we frequented in S Africa. Given the location (very close to Nelson Mandela house) this isn't surprising or problematic. Local band/ dancers were performing in the courtyard while we selected from the buffet and ate at the picnic tables. This added to the atmosphere but expect to be asked for... More

I've eaten several times at Sakhumzi in Soweto and the experience has always been consistent. If you don't mind the basic surroundings and being jammed together in a large open communal area or one of the smaller areas of the former house it works. I've only ever had the buffet and that has been consistent. Nothing to write home about... More

Brought here by locals on a quick visit to Soweto. The food was really tasty and plenty of it. I especially liked the chakalaka. right across the road from the Mandela house so a little touristy. But can't knock it. Try it.
