Modern African cuisine with vegan options

This restaurant (and guest house) is located in Melville, a small district in J'burg with bars, cafés and cute boutiques. We were staying at the Lucky Bean guesthouse so popped here for a quick lunch and were so impressed we went back for dinner. Ostrich burger was unbelievably tasty and not at all dry. Snoek fish cake, ostrich spring rolls and springbok pie were good but Senegalese chicken stew was wonderful. All washed down with great drinks making for a... More

We ate at the Lucky Bean twice during our stay in Jo'burg and can recommend the food overall. The Moroccan chicken was excellent as was the calamari starter; and a special call-out for the ostrich steak. We found both the red and white wines by the glass very good. We appreciated the service and the quiet atmosphere - we could... More

We had dinner at Lucky Bean a while ago. I don't know what happened since I was there last, but it was not good. Service was weird - that's the best I can describe it as. We had the pork belly starter to share followed by the Asian & Lucky Bean burgers. Nothing special. We ordered wine by the glass... More

June 2015 We ate here 3 times while staying at the Lucky Bean Guesthouse nearby. Good was great. Service was excellent Prices were very reasonable The red wine was delicious if you are allowed to describe wine in such a manner. And it was quiet enough that we could have a conversation. Do yourself a favour and eat there. We... More

We chose this restaurant for a special birthday lunch based on its Tripadvisor ratings and after having read many of the reviews. What a mistake it turned out to be! This is a classic example of pictures telling only half the story...The restaurant is grubby and jaded (certainly different to the pictures on the site). We made a reservation so,... More

Firstly I have to say that I am sorry that you were disappointed. As a restaurateur, I am never happy to hear that. Secondly, we are in the process of replacing some of the chairs, and I'm sorry that you were not as comfortable as you could have been. You weren't "lucky' to get a table cloth on your table.... Definitely worthy of all the accolades. Great vegetarian choices plus exotic (to me) game. The service was friendly, the wine excellent (well, that's not news in South Africa), and the neighborhood a safe little walk.

Lucky Bean is a fantastic experience start to finish. The start entails complimentary warm bread that's somewhere between a rustic loaf and cornbread...chewy, slightly sweet, and simply delicious! The menu is extensive without being overwhelming and friendly to both vegetarians and carnivores. The starters and meals are as tasty as they are beautiful -- the chef clearly takes his art... More

We arrived late at the restaurant but the staff were really friendly. The cocktails were great - I would definitely recommend the Old Fashioned. We had heard good things about the Ostrich Steak and it didn't disappoint - this is served medium rare which I love but if you don't like your steak slightly bloody I wouldn't recommend it. The... Firstly I think the place has a nice atmosphere, they often have live music, the settings is nice but not "too much" in the way of decoration. The service was friendly. We had good wine, awesome ostrich filet and ostrich burger. Also tried the kudu and several other main courses, all good. The cook did a good job and the price... More
