Unfortunately, Libby's El Rey has closed permanently. The owner's lease was not renewed. This place will be missed by many. It was a favorite for many locals, as well as for many travelers, and I have heard many travelers say it was a ritual to eat there when they went through Globe.

I didn't like the place anyhow. Service was terrible, obnoxious teeners. I told the waitress there was a mistake on the bill and she haughtily informed me she doesn't make mistakes. So I left no tip, and the error was in my favor by $10. Never went back and I never will now.

Libby's El Rey Cafe is closed. Surrounded by a chain link fence. Perhaps as some naysayers might say, to keep the vermin in, but it was a place unlike any other, and will be missed. 20 years of grime? Absolutely. Greasy chips? Buttered. Low prices? Cheaper than fast food. It was quite the experience, and usually packed.

I rated the atmosphere as average just because I could not decided between awful and great. The charm of the place is based partly on its dumpiness, but it is clean and none of the broken bits got in the way. The food is generally very good, but it is the tortillas that make me want to go back to... More

Walked in on what seemed to be arguing or tension between the two waitresses. Recieved the most greasy chips I've ever seen, which turned us off but later found out it was butter poured over them?? There appeared to be 20 year's worth of grime build-up under the old tables and ripped up booth seats. The trip to bathroom was... More

The food was very good, the service was okay, but it's kind of small inside, not good if you're in a group of 6 or more. They were open on Sunday when everything else Mexican was closed. We'll try it again.

I came down to visit for the holidays and my sister and I ordered some burros and chips and salsa. I couldn't wait to sink my teeth into a bean burro after being away from Globe's Mexican food for a few years. When I ate the burro I noticed the beans were very dark and almost dry, but that wasn't... More

In the tiny and almost forgotten town of Globe, Arizona, the distinctive neon sign outside the run-down looking building guides you to a funky family restaurant that is low on atmosphere, but high on pretty good Mexican food. The place looks like the dive that it is, using cast off kitchen dinning room furniture and second hand booths for decor.... More

I went back for my 30 year class reunion and I'm be damned if El Rey isn't exactly the same after 30 years. Same great food, same dumpy tables, same horrible decor, everything. It's like going to a restaurant in Mexico. I ate until I burst, as many items as I could. Everything was as excellent as I remembered. They... More

We arrived 5 minutes after they opened, several people were already seated. Obviously very popular place. They brought us fresh chips, the chips were good. Next time we will try the buttered chip option. The 2 sauces they brought with chips were good. The waitress took our order in a timely manner, but we ordered a meal that included tamales,... More
