In the beggining we didn't like the place, but next day we understand the magic of Franz. It took about 1.5 h to wait for the food, that was a bit pricey but quite delicious. However that waiting time saved our yawning faces from getting to the next door bar and getting hammered on Sat night. So we woke up... More

The decor and atmosphere in this place takes you back in time, and although the food is also presented in a old-fashioned way, it tastes great!Every main meal comes with free vegetables on the side, something that you hardly ever find anymore. The staff are friendly, very good service.

Good food and nice warm atmosphere. Should visit and have breakfast there you wont regret. Also try to get in early as places are limited. Do order the open grill sandwich

We had a very nice dinner, well prepared and served with vegetables. A cozy place to eat. And the service was very good.

Ohakune is very quiet in December with many restaurants closed. At least alpine was open. Looks scruffy from outside but food was tasty. A bit meat and 2 veg , ie, nothing fancy, but ticked the box when wanted somewhere to eat in what is something of a ghost town

We had an evening meal at the Alpine Winebar Restaurant after competing in mountain running events on Mt Ruapehu. The food was delicious. Our meals included the gourmet pork dish - beautifully moist and tender pork pieces, served with a cajun coating, and with large juicy portobello mushrooms. The other meal was the lamb rump, stuffed with prunes and sun-dried... More

I think some of the bad reviews of this restaurant may have accidentally placed on the wrong restaurant. There is a place 25 metres down the road called "Alpine motel", and it had a small restaurant attached. We stayed the weekend in Ohakune, and ate at Alpine Restaurant and Wine Bar both nights. The food was really good, and the... More

The place was always empty whenever I go by. I decided to try it out to see why. The place had a German/Austrian decor. The staff were friendly when I walked in and were pleasant as they got me menus and a jug of water. I had the venison croquettes for an entrée which came out in a reasonable time.... More

This review is only for the drinks that we had not dinner. We thought that some mulled vine was in order so where better than an Austrian/German place? Our waitress brought us out a glass of Glühwein that had just been microwaved to about 200 degrees. She did warn us not to drink it and we couldn't for a good... More
