Spiritual, poetic, enchanting….Sonja and her husband have truly created a magical place! I felt like curling up with the cats and never leaving! Her fruit is divine, especially the soursops! Try one if available (chilled)….and let the flavors take you on a ride! Thank you for your work of LOVE... read more

Sonja, the Austrian chef at Tauono's Garden Cafe, is a world class culinary artist. All her fresh produce of which there are several sides at every meal, is grown organically, and she is a master of flavour. Open 3 days a week, lunch or midday dinner here is not to be missed. I speak as a local, having moved here... More

Everything - the location, the friendly service, the food were soooo good. It was relaxed and one of the best places we had lunch- so good we went on both Wednesday and Friday - highly recommend. Good to know all the food is fresh too. Unusual combinations of food too that we wouldn't usually try.

Lovely rustic setting among the plants for lunch. Sonja does an excellent job cooking up great meals, using mostly fresh ingredients from her garden. Also does nice fish when available. Highly recommend the Coconut cake for desert. She also has very interesting and well illustrated book. Part cookbook and part plant descriptions. It makes a nice memento of Aitutaki.

Fresh fruit and veges may be at a premium in Aitutaki, but whilst Tauono's has a nice garden it's not automatically a 5 star. Some of the fruit we bought was bad, despite the assurances of the woofer who served us. The cafe prices are outrageously high, maybe OK for some of the dishes but $20 plus for cake fruit... More

We ate here as it was only a two minute walk from Etu Moana where we were staying and having been told about it in advance we had some idea of what to expect in Tauono's setting and facilities - charmingly 'rustic' pacific islands-style set up delivering good food using fabulous ingredients coming for the most part from the large... We just came to the fruit market here, which was GOOD. The passionfruit was a tad overpriced and not completely fresh, but everything else was fantastic. The only problem was the lady who works at this place. She couldn't stop grunting at me the first day I came here, and when she placed 'OPEN' signs all over the next day... More

We visited several times to purchase salads, tomatoes and fruit. Sonia took us around her amazing vegetable garden and hand picked a number of herbs that we had never tasted before. Combines with the rocket and lettuce she picked, we had some amazing salads while we stayed on the island all courtesy of Sonia's garden. It is open Mon, Wed... More
