Old-fashioned quality Costa Rican restaurant

This place is a classic in San José. It has good food, with a very local style. The service is great, friendly. I enjoy the typical side dishes the most: platains, black beans, etc.

We were recommend to dine here by a family we met on the flight to San Jose, we were not disappointed. We dined on 8 occasions hence sampling delicious food, some very new to us as we are from the UK. Every meal was served by courteous staff and we met the owner a very pleasant helpful lady, her daughter's... More

Of course my salad and salmon encrusted in almonds was a delicious meal, but as a sweets lover, the Coconut Flan was the best I have ever eaten! And my friend's steak looked so good I kind of wished I ordered it!

I went here on a business meeting and being a non-tico, I had never tried the pejibayes because I was advised against it. Apparently is a very local palate. Well let me tell you that the soup and the rib eye were excellent. Meat cooked to perfection and that local soup ain´t not that local anymore.

Went to this place after recommendation from the hotel. The welcome was great, good bread, wine suggestion and sauces. Ordered tenderloin got some sort of sirloin type cut...sent it back..they gave me a flank that again they tried to pass off as tenderloin and again was not what i asked for..only on the third attempt did they give me tenderloin.... Always the balance between food and service. Here the food (Chileans Salmon) was very good and the service better. In our case the maître (sorry that I can not remember his name) was very knowledgeable about the food, what to choose and his recommendation was right. I like it very much and I recommend it. I come to this restaurant regularly with customers and friends because of its great quality food and good service given by its personnel. This is a traditional restaurant of San Jose and has been opened for decades however they keep giving the great service.

A local businessman we were working with in San Jose said we had to come here for lunch and I am so glad we did. Everything was fantastic. The steak, and I am not a big steak person, was outstanding. The service was wonderful. It is a little out of the way if you are staying downtown or out by... More

We had a truly memorable dinner here and would heartily recommend the steaks. We were very well looked after by our waiter, Carlos, who made us feel very welcome and made helpful recommendations about the menu. It's a gem.

The hardest thing to find in San Jose are restaurants that are consistently good. El Chicote has been around for 50 years. I have been going there for 35 years and the Baby Beef is just as fabulous as it was then. The prices are comfortable, the service is very good, the ambience is comfortable. It's a good place for...
