Superb!!

Suffice to say I generally never repeat visit the same restaurant twice on vacation. This was the exception. One of the best meals of my life when you put together the fresh fish, delicious caipirinha's, atmosphere and watching the chef work his magic. After traveling to Puerto Viejo several years now I think that El Refugio has out priced themselves for what they serve. This used to be our favorite place but $100 for two people without drinks is a bit excessive. The food was good don't get me wron but I can have just as good food and service at Amimodo or... More

We were driving from Congo Bongo into Puerto Veijo for dinner our first night and just happened to see the sign, so we turned around and went in - we're glad we stopped! The ambiance is amazing - the whole restaurant is about 5 tables underneath a beautiful hut with white curtains and lights, plus there's a single table outside... More

Not enough words to express our gratitude to the chef and the stuff. Grate dishes. We had for starters guacamole & chips and tropical salat. Both very tasty. Then we had the tuna steak and the beef steak. We still arguing which was better... The hand made brownies with ice cream was a perfect desert to conclude this lovely meal.... More

Food- excellent, service- impeccable, ambiance- perfect! My husband and I rode our bikes on a very dark road to find this hidden treasure and it was well worth the trip! We ordered the chips and guacamole and were amazed to see the chef making the chips fresh per order, wow!Delicious! Our main courses were steak and the fresh pasta and... More

The food was really good. The atmosphere was quiet and peaceful. The owner is living the dream. Open a five star restaurant, change the menu when either you feel like it or ingredients are more readily available. Be within walking distance to one of the best surf spots in the area and the owner is really nice.

Started with the handmade chips and guacamole. My partner had the tuna for entree and I had the steak. The tuna was the best we had during our week stay in the area. The steak was very good, too. The chef came out and met with us briefly, which always resonates well with us. Great dessert choices, too.

My family and I came to El Refugio the other night, and it was so good we decided to come back! Ordered fantastic beef with chimichurri sauce, and the tuna, muscles, and pork with mustard sauce - all I recommend! I was very disappointed in the baby octopus main course, however, it was very very oily, lacking flavor, and too... More

Small, very nice restaurant. Staff was very professional and attentive. Food was amazing--especially the tuna! Will definitely eat here again.
