Delicious

Lovely food in a wonderful atmosphere…. they even set up a little table for us in the trees! Best tuna steak that I've had in a very long time.

The appetizers where delicious (huge, tasty mussels and guacamole), the tuna well prepared and the chimichurri steaks tasty and filling. The service is excellent as well. The best restaurant in the region in my opinion... although there are many still.

The tuna was one of the best meals I have ever eaten. We went back a second time because the husband wanted to order the tuna. It's small and only takes cash. I felt the prices were reasonable for the quality.

This was the only place we visited that when we pulled up, it looked like they may already be full. They found a spot for us and the meal was delicious! I had the bife w/chimichurri and my dining companions both had the tuna. Portions, quality and flavor were all top notch!

My husband and I ate here for dinner in mid February. It was our third time and certainly not the last! I honestly look forward to coming here every year while on vacation In Costa Rica. My husband had the tuna, and I had the steak (skirt steak I believe). We both loved our meals and I think the steak... More

This is a different review--we couldn't find our accommodations so we stopped at the hotel to use the phone. The owner(?) was so helpful esp since there is barely any cell service there. As with a lot of places in Puerto Viejo. We went back for a meal a few days later as a thank you for her help. Surprisingly... More

We stopped for lunch one afternoon and ordered pork chops from the grill as well as fish. The food was excellent!

This was my favorite restaurant which I I visited during a 5-week trip from Panama to Guatemala. El Refugio is a small (6 table) restaurant staffed by the owner/chef, a single waitress, and an additional chef. The restaurant is in a beautiful spot within thick jungle, and the sounds of monkeys and birds provided a great atmosphere during the meal.... More

Went to El Refugio last night for meal out whilst on Holiday in Puerto Viejo. Real highlight of our trip so far - incredible wine, great friendly service and delicious food. Could not recommend more highly. Romantic setting too. Thank you!! P.s if you're able to reply and tell us the name of the amazing soft bodied Malbec we had... More

Hi there, We are glad that you had a good time at El Refugio. The wine you had was TRIVENTO RESERVA - MALBEC. This wine is a reserve with 9 months on Oak´s barrel. Recommended for food cooked on the grill...or the way you like it! Thank you for your nice review, see you next trip! Have a great 2015!... More

This place really is something special. The menu is relatively small (which I like) and although we only tried 2 of the 5 or 6 main dishes, they were both exquisite. I had the tuna which was quite possibly the best tuna I've ever had. It was cooked to perfection and the seasoning was simple yet delicious. My friends had... More
