Easy dining and nice food. They speak English if your Chinese isn't good. This place is becoming a regular for my partner and I.

The service is sometimes inconsistant but when its good, its good. The food is mostly amazing, the club sandwich, cappuccinos, and salads are excellent. I have gone as a singular, as a pair, as a foursome, and as a group of 6.

We ate here twice during our stay in Shanghai. Both nights we were able to eat outside overlooking the small residential and restaurant street in the French Concession of Shanghai. It is a small restaurant, very expat-friendly with excellent western food and a friendly café setting. While we love the big formal restaurants in Shanghai as well, it is nice... More

I used to go here a lot.. Great atmosphere, coffee and food.. I left Shanghai 2 years ago and on my return on Business I thought would have lunch at Citizen to break up the Shopping on Saturday.. On Entering I immediately ordered a Latte & Eggs Benedict.. The Latte arrived promptly.. After 15 Minutes I enquired about the Eggs... More

As more cafes and new restaurants are opening up in the area, Citizen Cafe is not as packed as it was when we first ate there four years ago. But the service levels are still very good and staff recognize regulars. We go there at least once a fortnight and the food is, to us, more like comfort food -... More

Citizen Cafe introduced me to a new summer favorite, the Lychee Martini - nice, juicy, hollowed lychee soaking up generous gin! And in my opinion, the best steak sandwich I've had in Shanghai. Upstairs for dinner, downstairs for drink atmosphere and patio for all the above until after 10!

The coffee at Citizen is excellent and the service is flawless. The interior is plush and almost out of place in the very Chinese street it is located on; it reminded us of one of the cafes in Argentina or Italy. If anything, it is a little hard to relax as you feel it is too formal. Definitely worth visiting... More

While the food is ok, it is the atmosphere that draws people here. A mix of locals and foreigners in an inviting space. Good coffee.

I have been here at least a half a dozen times with different people and the food is always good. The set menu for lunch is a good value for the caliber of food and service. They only accept cash. The seating is comfortable and the coffees are nice.

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighborhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
