Great food and service. NZD50 for a family of four. Fast, cheerful and authentic. No English spoken but English translation on menu. Point and smile!

It becomes a little too easy when in Shanghai, even in the week prior to Christmas when smarter tourists are in warmer parts of the world, to frequent places that cater more to tourists. And then you find a place like Cha's, recommended by Lonely Planet and of course by TripAdvisor contributors. There's no chance of a reservation here. Just... More

LOVIN this place a lot! Keep coming back almost every week after my first visit, just simple dishes with great taste. Must have items for me: Pork Chop Rice, Eggs & Prawn, Polo Bun, Fried Noodle, Crispy Chicken with Lemon Sauce. That's my most fave dishes, but it doesn't mean that the others not delicious, they are too. You can... More

One of the best places i have eaten in shanghai! I have order "Kale" in soy sauce, Chicken, Beef and a Fujian Rice. All of it was delicious. The flavour was smooth and perfect! Since this place is usually crowded expect that you will share the table with some estrangers :) not bad at all. Price was affordable, no more... More

This is a very "local" restaurant that serves Hong Kong style food. I was the only westerner in the restaurant, and there was a huge line waiting to get in during my entire stay. If you prefer fancy quiet places to eat, this is not for you. The interior is very basic and if there are less than two people... More

This very cheap and crowded restarurant is a surprise. They will seat you in any place free at the moment, this means that you can end up with other people at the table. The food is great and served in a quick and efficient way. The staff speaks only Chinese, but it's easy to get understood. Must try.

Definitely a local experience. Read about it in Lonely Planet guide. We were the only Westerners in the restaurant. Arrived at 5 PM so walked right in. We were seated at a booth for 4 and told to sit next to each other. Sure enough, a chinese mother and daughter were seated across from us within minutes. The menus are... More

Perfect place to have great food and feel local for an hour before being asked to leave politely in order to place others ! Due to constant traffic of food lovers, this place has the kind of atmosphere you for sure want to live in Shanghai ! Impossible to have dinner on your own, they squeeze everyone in ..... you... Plan on arriving before noon, which is when the crowds start pouring in. Cha's is modeled after a typical Hong Kong tea restaurant and the furniture and fixtures, right down to the old-school mosaic tiles and tiled walls are reminiscent of a traditional cha chan teng. Granted, the food is nowhere as good as the best cha chan teng I've... More

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighborhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
