Taiwan food

I am a fan of Taiwan food, as someone once explained Taiwan food is fusion Chinese food picking the best from each region. I went there for lunch but place is most well known for providing late night snacks until 4:am in the morning. This place has a very nice atmosphere. The waitstaff is... read more

Charmant is one of those restaurants where you could have been eating there for years, and then you go with a friend who orders some dishes, and suddenly all of your future orders have been affected. My favorites include the cabbage salad as a starter, the clay pot eggplant (veggie or with minced pork), dragon beans fried in garlic, and... More

This well established Taiwanese restaurant happens to have the best hot chocolate in town. Rich, dark, and serious -- will keep you awake!

I ate at this restaurant a month ago, and was in a bit of a rush to finish lunch. I informed the waitress of that the second I sat down, and my friend and I promptly ordered. My friend's food came instantly, but mine did not come until she was almost done eating. In addition, I had ordered chicken rice.... More

Food at Charmant is always good and always consistent. A great place to eat out an unpretentious but absolutely amazing Taiwanese cuisine. I come everytime i am in Shanghai and it does not disappoint.

Came here for takeout was seated to wait for my order with a view of the kitchen window where food comes out. The man working behind the window was visibly drunk and disgustingly flirting with the waitresses. I saw two women handling food picking their teeth with their fingers and then carrying food to tables. This restaurant used to be... More

We have been there 2 times. The first time we ordered a lot of dishes to try different things. Some were very good while other were actually not that good. The second time we only ordered the dishes that we liked. Gong-Bao Chicken, Sichuan Style Beef and Shrimp fried rice with pineapple are our favorite dishes.

After reading the reviews we were quite looking forward to this. At 220 Rmb for two it is difficult to be overly critical but overall we were a bit disappointed. Brocolli came steamed rather than stir-fried but was good. Deep fried oysters and the rice dish were good. Duck very disappointing. Staff seemed weary. Great flowers!

I was taken here while visiting on business by a family friend, a 10 year resident of Shanghai, and was very impressed. Generally I am not a fan of Taiwanese food, but every dish she ordered was light and tasty. Perhaps the pancake wraps were a little on the fragile side, but once you had shoveled them into your mouth... More

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighborhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
