I decided to visit this place for breakfast before class. Since I have been a native of Birmingham and aware of this place being here for years, I decided to give it a shot. Bad idea. This place is filthy on the inside. There is only one person working so I'm Assuming that he does not have a lot of... More

Fat Sam's is a local shop, not a chain. That being said, I much prefer the sandwiches at Fat Sam's to those at the chain sandwich shops around town. My personal favorite is the chicken philly (they also have the traditional steak philly sandwich), but I've tried many different things on the menu, and I have never been disappointed. Usually... I loved my Philly and my husband loved his reuben. He got a bag of chips with his and mine came with fresh cut French fries. This plus two drinks was $16. Would definitely go back if in the neighborhood. It is a hole in the wall place with plenty of character and characters!!

I've been a B'ham resident for 25 years and a Fat Sam's customer for 5 years. Nothing better when you're looking for a sandwich shop, no matter what craving you have. Philly is the only one in town that my Philly native friend will eat (he's a picky chief but that doesn't stop him here). My personal favorite is the... More

What a nice place to spend your lunch hour, unless you've got the afternoon to spend here, too! The sandwiches offered are one-of-a-kind, and the meat and cheese is sliced right in front of you, so you know you're getting the freshest of fresh. Oh yeah, they even slice your french fries straight from a potato for you.... you ain't... More

Definitely a hole-in-the-wall, but that's what makes it so lovable. Nothing fancy. Just a great little sub place with an owner who'll act like he's known you a lifetime. Very Southern hospitality. :)

Sam is very personable and will make you a damn good sandwich. You will probably either really like or dislike the service, but I like the neighborhood feel. Check out the Fetta Finger -- a chicken tender sub, smothered in lettuce and melted feta cheese.

He is always personable and cool. Always willing to talk football or rock n roll. I usually get the ham pita with provolone... More

It's a small hole in the wall place with modest furnishings but fantastic food. Nothing fancy, just great subs and homemade fries. It seems like Sam is always there, and if there is a bigger UAB fan in Birmingham, I have not met him. He's a big guy with a big heart for the city and some great food. My... More
