Meat is dry. No one eats here except tourists and to give you an idea, there were only 2 other tables at prime dinner time. The English menu had no prices. And the waiter up sold me boat when they didn't have suckling pig. It was dry like pork jerky. Also don't order the Portuguese egg tarts, they're old and... More

We went there with some hesitancy because there were some negative reviews. It was a walk thru a sketchy area from the cathedral- which is worth the visit. The place was empty. There is no goat only lamb though it appears that there is considerable confusion about this. The Caipirinhas were terrible. Tasted like the limes had sat in the... More

Just not very good! Trying to understand what all the rave is about. The only thing we really liked were the cod fish balls. They gave us the English menu and there were no prices listed. We thought it couldn't be too much since tripadvisor put the range between $15-30. My husband ordered cod Provençal. I ordered the half order... More

Lapa is one of the most traditional neighbourhoods in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Nova Cappella is one of the most traditional restaurants in this neighbourhood and, therefore, one of the most traditional in the city. The food is of high quality and they have some exotic dishes like wild "javali". The most popular dish is roasted goat with broccoli rice.... More

Went there on recommendation of a long-time Rio expat. The restaurant has the old-time feeling: waiters in white dinner jackets who not only bring your food to your table but also serve a portion onto your plate. I tried the deep-fried codfish ball (I think it's R$4 each) which was very good. Then I had their famous roast baby goat... More

We came to Nova Capela at 4am after a long and merry night in Rio. The ability at Nova Capela to serve such great dishes and be hospitable at this hour simply amazed me. At first we had "bolinho de bacalhau" - the traditional Brazilian cod balls - and it was simply some of the best ever. The main dish... More

If you're only going to Lapa once - you have to eat here. Has great old school charm and insanely good food. Waiter was super helpful and patient with the language barrier as he guided us through the menu. He basically changed our order completely, and I'm glad that he did because he served us some fantastic beef in an... More

I found this restaurant really interesting for the food quality and freschness. Beef and fish was just amazing, well cooked and really tasty. The service has been quite slow and not precise (the bill had lots of mistakes, better check before paying!), may be due to the high season...carnaval....really crowded!! The price was 45 R$ each considering that we left... More

The Sterns, of course, wrote Roadfood, the original chowhound's bible, describing the best indigenous restaurants in America. Were they to write a similar volume for Brazil, Nova Capela would definitely be included. This is old school Brazil, with waiters in white jackets walking around the tile-walled dining room offering service, food, and a dining experience that probably isn't much changed... More
