Historic, perhaps the oldest of Rio de Janeiro, with excellent potato salad, and a variety of tasty sausages and chop (beer) and gentle and efficient servers, but very noisy, like many places in Brazil, the regulars have little concern for the presence of the others, and we can't stay long to enjoy the ambience.

Around for 125 years, Bar Luiz on the Rua Carioca is a traditional downtown favourite with a solid unchanging menu. Its physical appearance as a German beer hall is matched by a menu specializing in chopp (beer), excellent potato salad, and a variety of tasty sausages and salt meats. Hidden away on the large menu is a chicken cutlet served... More

Lovely lunch of traditional German food! My partner and I shared a mixed plate for one and it was too much for us to finish (and we like to eat!!). The rib was absolutely delicious and the potato salad was quite possibly the best I have ever had. Highly recommend!

One the few places downtown with reasonable prices, and a good quantity of food. Beer on draft is fabulous, Roast beef and potato salad an absolute must.

You go for the ambience and nursery food. When the weather is bad or you are feeling low, go to BL for a few uplifting beers and sausages with potato salad. A blast from the past. The knuckle of pork is also excellent. Nothing nouvelle in sight.

We were expecting a very traditional place, but minimally adapted to our era, but we found a Bar/restaurant that stopped 30 years ago. The service was medium, the food nothing special.

I like to come here at night when it's half empty. The service is better. But the food is always the same - above average and for one who likes Eastern European dishes it's worthwhile. The potato salad is decent, the sausages are good and always an apple something for dessert.

We turned up around lunch time and the place was packed with locals. It specialises in hearty German food like Kartoffelsalat (potato salad), Wuerstchen (sausages), Sauerkraut and of course beer. Intresting piece of trivia: it used to be called Bar Adolf, but they had to change the name during WWII.
