This place takes a very creative, modern approach to traditional Bahian cuisine. Unlike another reviewer, we found the acaraje to be absolutely scrumptious (rich, spicey, with an almost southeast Asian limeiness). The baked wasabi fish and grilled seafood salad were super fresh and really interesting. Above average expensive for the area, but some of the best atmosphere (a kind of...

Tries O Cacau based onour Poussada's recommendation. Food was delicious. We started with an appetizer plate for two, which has a mix of small little tidbits coming in pairs (elements with chese, two with meat, one with shrimp, batata, etc). For the main we had the grilled lobster, as well as one of the fish (with mashed potatoes). Both were...

We ordered: acaraje (Bahian specialty) and they were bad. Shrimp entree was tough and overcooked. Soup and fish dish were fine but bland. Service was all right, but not particularly friendly. Ambiance is nice. Prices high. Would not recommend.
The restaurant is right at the Quadrado. Nice atmosphere, good food and good service. The fish is great, try the "Peixe Taipe", and the desserts are wonderful (cocada de forno, hot chocolate cake). Pricey, as every restaurant in Trancoso, but the Cacao is worth the money.
We enjoyed the Moqueca and all the other Bahian specialties here which used coconut milk in the dishes. Appetizers were fresh and tasty and the wine list is good. O Cacau would be a great venue for large parties but during our dinner here, we were fortunate enough to have a table with lots of comfy cushion on the seats...

I spent 7 nights in Trancoso and 4 nights I went to Cacau to dine. The meal is absolutely perfect, - the "moqueca" is fabulous, the "fish with banana" delicious. and the mini "acarajes" are superb!
The service is great, which is something that is very rare in Bahia!!!!!!
The atmosphere is cozy, lots of trees around, really well decorated,...

O Cacau is the last restaurant in the Quadrado (or the first if you start from the Church). It is a relaxed place, where the food is good, from the little strips of baked coconut to the cream of mango for the desert. Although I don't eat fish, the traditional "moquecas" where a hit with other members of the family,...

If you are looking for a nice and sophisticated place for a special occasion in Trancoso this is the restaurant to go. As most of the things there, it is very expensive, compared to high standard places in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. There are around 5 good restaurants in Trancoso and "O Cacau" is definitely one of them.
If you're after a moqueca (typical stew) or lobster, this is the place to go. This was also the only place I saw that served Acarajés, a delicacy that is typical of Salvador, the capital of the state of Bahia, where Trancoso is located. Not cheap, but if you're after cheap these days forget Brazil and head to New York...
