Given its history and status as an old-timer in Alexandria, I expected Gadsby's Tavern to be overpriced and unimaginative. I was wrong. The menu contains items that make a nod to the colonial period, but are inventive and very tasty. My friends and I shared the three meals we ate, the crab cake, the beef and brie, and the fish.... The true American history experience over dinner. The prime rib is excellent and on weekends they have actors that walk the dining areas speaking with the guests. Great time, great great time.

I imagine that the food is quite different than when George Washington slept here. Though he might have enjoyed the peanut soup as did my wife and I. The beef and cheese dip sandwich was well prepared with lots of lean sliced meat and cheese accompanied by the broth dip. My wife had a salad topped with grilled chicken. The... More

They did not let us put our bill on George Washington's tab, but they were very gracious in seating us just for some beer. Then we saw the menu and ordered some food even though we had already had dinner. Don't judge. Great food, and very friendly staff. Had a great talk with a manager about Alexandria and he shared... We went to Gadsbys upon a recommendation from a friend. We were looking for period dressing employees and those "in character". We were somewhat disappointed because the wait staff weren't in character. And one of them wasn't even dressed in colonial clothing. Then this elderly man came in very much in character. He visited all the tables and was quite... More

Staff are dressed in period dress, and restaurant is lit up by candles only (so seems very dark till your eyes adjust). Their menu tries to offer old school recipes and beers. Enjoyed a Jefferson ale and a vegetarian casserole. Overall experience was a four stars, with food probably three and atmosphere three, but together they make a four.

Went here for a rehearsal dinner for a family member. Very historic and menu was very early American. You will like the atmosphere if you are a history buff.

We got lucky. We have dined at Gadsby's many times over the years, and some experiences are wonderful, others disastrous. Last night was in the wonderful category. We dine regularly with a friend, always choosing high cuisine, but our friend had just experienced many consecutive evenings of top quality cuisine that we thought we go for a special atmosphere, something... Dined on a Sunday evening as a group of 4. Walked in without a reservation and found the restaurant mostly empty. The group dined on 2 different seafood dishes, Herb-crusted Grilled Salmon and Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes, and 2 orders of the "Gentleman's Pye". None achieved a Wow factor. The salmon was dry, the Pye was quite salty, and the... More

We have dined at Gadsby's in the past and have always been happy with the experience. It's been a while since we've been and clearly management has gone downhill and is cutting corners. We thought it would be fun to take our four children out to a special Easter dinner at Gadsby's. We checked out their fixed-price menu and were... More
