great meal

i was staying at the Martha Washington and walked down the street for a great steak. I sat at the bar and the service was outstanding. Most of the staff had worked there for a long time and you could tell that they enjoyed there jobs. The building is old and quaint which brought a lot of charm to... read more

This restaurant was recommended to us by some locals as being one of their favorites and is likely one of the best choices in the area. The property is set in what feels like a turn-of the-century house/ store, so has the old-time feel to it. Seating has numerous options, including a second floor deck and nice outdoor patio area.... Pros: Convenient location, good German beer selection, excellent food Cons: none This was our first time at this highly rated restaurant and we had high expectations; we were not disappointed. The setting is a historic tavern with uneven floors (a warning to those with walking difficulties). The ambiance is cosy, warm, and welcoming. Friendly staff seated us quickly in an... More

The Tavern is a very historic site and has a great deal of character. Our waitress was somewhat disconnected. The german veal dish was plain and somewhat dry and the steaks also dry. Quite a disappointment. The gentleman who rounded in the dining room was quite pleasant.

The Tavern came highly recommended to the 6 of us traveling together for the weekend. We made reservations for Friday night, and had a great time. The atmosphere was tremendous - being in such a historic structure. The food was outstanding, and the service was also very good. The owner came by and checked on us numerous times, giving the... This is in a quaint - but dark - historic house. We had a later dinner here with friends. The service and the food was excellent. They have a lovely option for splitting a meal - for $10 you get an extra salad and sides. That was a gracious plenty for a couple! The Tavern offers some traditional German food,... More

Excellent food and good service in an old quaint building in the centre of Abingdon. The prices are a little high for the area but otherwise we had a good experience.

Enjoyed a wonderful dining experience here with friends. One of them is a fellow history aficionado, which made it extra special. The place dates from 1779 and it retains the look and feel while not sacrificing convenience, comfort, or cleanliness. They have a good wine list and a reasonably varied menu. I had the Jumbalaya, which was spicy, as advertised,... More

3 of us dined at the Tavern for dinner. We were promptly seated in a cozy spot in the 150+ year old building. We chose escargot in puff pastry and smoked salmon for appetizers. Both were excellent! 2 of the 3 of us chose prime rib (one blackened) and I selected a black and blue filet mignon (covered with blue... More
