The Tavern is a very cool restaurant, dating to 1779. It was a post office and a hospital for civil war soldiers. The food is quite good, prices are medium to high ($30 for a filet mignon). The owner is a native German, with three signature German dishes on the menu. I had the smoked pork, and my husband had... More

Wonderful, romantic dinner with great rack of lamb! Great wines, and had a tour after dinner of the historic building. Heard ghost storied about the restaurant. A nice end to the evening.

Upon entering we were asked if we had a reservation. We didn't, as we had traveled from out of town to attend a play at the Barter. We were told they would have to seat us on the covered patio since we didn't have reservations. It was before 5 p.m. Looked around and the restaurant was pretty empty. We had... More

My wife and I plus four cousins and their spouses had dinner at The Tavern before a Barter play and enjoyed the meal and conversation with the owner, Max Hermann. Max learned we were going to the play soon after arrival and he promised us he would see that we were served promptly so we wouldn't be late. I chose... More

We made reservations for a dinner at the Tavern while we were in town for a family reunion. My husband and I were accompanied by my parents. We were seated immediately after our arrival and service was timely for the remainder of the meal. We had 3 appetizers split between us. The brie, salmon and escargot. The Brie was my... More

Steaks were excellent. Tender and properly cooked. Fresh salads with option to try the special oil and vinegar from local Olive Oil distributor. Setting was really pleasant. This is a nice place to go for a special meal before the Barter. Make sure you tell them when you make reservations. We ate at 5:30 and had plenty of time to... More

The Tavern serves a mix of American and Austrian/German food. Their offerings are well prepared and the Wiener schnitzel with their rendition of spaetzle were very good. The black and bleu medallions were equally excellent as was a peanut butter and chocolate pie for dessert. The menu gives accurate suggestions for wine accompaniments, but the wine selection was below average... More

The Tavern's good reputation tempted us to try it for our final dinner in Abingdon, following a Barter Theatre Saturday matinee, so we made a reservation well in advance. Why bother? On our on-time arrival, we were told, "We aren't ready for you". Declining an invitation to sit at its tiny bar and buy a drink, we were directed to... More

As part of our Wizard of Oz trip to the Barter Theatre in Abingdon, we included The Tavern as part of our must do list. We had all eaten there before and had a pleasant experience. On this evening, we were treated to a delightful specialty salad that was grilled Romaine with blue cheese/bacon/tomatoes and figs finished with a "ruby... More

While claiming a heritage to 1779, and presenting that appearance with both the exterior and interior, George Washington would not have had the opportunity to dine here, unless he was a guest of the owner of the home that was the building then. Although the present owner, Max, a charming German native is celebrating 20 years of operating this Main... More
