We have had the joy of visiting The Tavern on several occasions. We love to come by here for a drink and appetizers after a show at the Barter Theatre, or a day of antiquing. What an incredible historical location. The outside courtyard is beautiful in the spring time.... and the bartender makes wonderful Sangria! Very cool place.....

We were in town to ride the Virginia Creeper Trail and made reservations at The Tavern based on reviews. We chose to eat inside because we did not want to chance the bug situation outside as evening was rapidly approaching. We were seated upstairs in a room almost with only one other couple, which was perfect since we had plans... More

The Tavern is our go to restaurant in whenever we are in Abingdon. The food is excellent and the atmosphere charming and quaint. The service is friendly and conscientious.

This was such a cool experience. As someone who loves history, good food, and good German beer - this place was perfect. The food was excellent, the beer selection was excellent (assuming you like German beer), the drinks were done well, the service was superb (the owner even came around and talked with us), and the atmosphere was one of... I have visited this restaurant on several occasions mostly on business trips. This visit was with my wife for dinner. The experience begins with the building itself - very old with low ceilings, uneven floors, and a narrow staircase. Part of the ambiance. I have always gone with one of the German entrées along with a good German beer they... More

Downtown old Abingdon is a delight. There are must do's when visiting -- the Martha Washington Inn and Barter Theater. And one of you dinners should be at The Tavern. It's old, lovely and inviting. The walls are cracked with 300 years of use. The floors tilt with the shifting mountains on the fault line. The food is really good,... More

It is recommended to make reservations especially for Fri & Sat nights. This is a historic place (read about it before choosing or going) and is not inexpensive. 4 friends went for a Fri night dinner at 6. Entrees order were beef medallions with grilled salmon, scallops & pasta with small grilled tomatoes, and crab cakes with jalapeño & cilantro... More

Wonderful ambiance, excellent service and delicious food. I ordered the salmon/rice dish and my husband ordered the grilled scallops. Both were outstanding. This is not an inexpensive place, good for a special occasion.

When first moving to SW Virginia from Portland Oregon, I was told that The Tavern was a required dining experience. It is, in fact, very nice, but we believe that it is over-rated from our viewpoint. We have nothing bad to say (except that the upstairs dining is difficult for people with mobility problems), the food is good, as is... More

We visited the Tavern and were greeted by the owner. The smells from the kitchen were aromatic. We ate outside; our service was good. The stuffed beef is beyond compare; the prime rib was also very good. I intended to order the Weinerschnitzel but was waylaid to a salmon special which was delicious. The smoked pork chops are a little... More
