Met our son for lunch at this restaurant we'd never heard of, just off 6th St. east of I-35. Our son has a way of picking out places in Austin that are unique with great food, so confidence was high. And he was right. We had the pork tamales and chalupas. Food is plentiful, prices very reasonable, but tight on... More

We finally made it here yesterday afternoon after trying for a while & are now wondering what the fuss is about. Basically we joined the line out the door, placed our order & paid, then waited in the VERY tiny inside area for our food. Seating is non-existent, with two tiny tables inside, one being reserved for employees, & one... More

I had really good super cheap breakfast tacos. Like $3 for 2. There are a few tables outside and a couple inside but it's more of a to go kind of place. Disclaimer: THIS IS A DIVE!

This is basically a carry out restaurant. It does have 4 small tables outside & a couple inside. I had heard about this taco shop & was looking forward to it. The food was average at best. The hot sauce was the best thing, so I soaked my food in it for flavor. Excellent hot sauce & mediocre food =... More

I have lived in Texas most of my life, and these are absolutely the best tacos I have had--hands down. You can't go wrong, no matter what you order. Not only is the food extra tasty, but the prices are super cheap. I visited The Tamale House with my husband and parents for the first time last weekend. We each... More

I'm from Austin and have had the chance to taste many breakfast tacos ... and by far The Tamale House serves my favorite! The food is inexpensive but don't expect a place to sit (besides two tables outside or your car), AC or a waiting area. It is always crowded but well worth the wait. My only complaint is that... as the lengthy line suggests. I once fed my entire company breakfast for $18. Worth stopping in for a chalupa or breakfast taco. A local legend.

In an inadvertant nod to "keeping it weird" in Austin, the Tamale House does not serve tamales. Well, it's hard to say they serve anything really, as it is a take-out only establishment that happens to have a few tables out front amongst the grackles and the incessant traffic circulation. Cheap and delicious, it is beloved locals but also beset... More

This is the quintessential "dive" and you can tell that no money is really invested back into the infrastructure. There is a tiny place to stand to place your order, a counter, and then basically the kitchen that you are staring straight into while they make your tacos. Maybe that is why they can have a menu that puts the... More

Tamale House is a great breakfast spot. They offer a wide variety of items including tacos, enchiladas, and combination plates. The value is great, and you can get way more than you need for under $5. My favorite menu choice is the Migas with Cheese. The wait is hit or miss, so if you can call your order in ahead... More
