So good and so welcoming!

After a failed attempt to have a good dinner on our first night in Japan, we were a little picky on our second night. And fortunately we found Kyoto Gogyo ! Appearance wise, the ramen is unique. Came here and expected a squid-ink ish ramen broth. Ended up with a somehow smokey taste of broth. The whole restaurant is even filled with its aroma. They also sell the clear broth ramen. However, ask the attendant to have the recommended one (black ramen).

Just like I said in the title, this ramen is good but not the best. The burnt ramen was too greasy, and I had to constantly drink water to flush the taste. The additional charge for side dish was okay IMO as it tastes quite good.

Burnt Ramen anyone? We waited for about 30-45mins but it was well worth it. My fiancé had the burnt ramen and I the regular usual. I must have been eye hungry because we also got the pork neck special dish and the crispy mayo shrimp. Like we didn't have enough pork already. The burnt/black ramen was good.. a bit too... More

I have been to Japan for the Sixth time and one thing I can say for sure, is that Japan always has Great Food and Beer.

Kogashi (burned) ramen here gets its superb flavours from charred lard, and it's a completely indulgent dish to have, a welcome difference from the usually clean eating in Japanese cuisine. It's an easy place to locate along the Nishiki Market, not too far off one of the side streets. Slightly oily but intensely flavoured, this is one of the better... More

I think the restaurant is a 3.5/5 but closer to 3. You will not be upset if you go but you won't be overly excited by the meal. The one positive is that the cost of dinner here compared to other highly rated restaurants is not too bad. For a couple with a starter + 2 mains and a few... More

Gogyo is in a central location near Nishiki Market. It's comfortable and offers an English menu. We came for the ramen, and it was certainly tasty, but there was one dish we talked about for the rest of the trip - it was a slow cooked miso beef dish that just melted in your mouth. We ate it so quickly,... More

The burnt miso ramen has a special taste to it but its not the best ramen i have had so far. Also tried their gyoza which is not too bad at all. However, i misunderstood the menu and ordered my ramen with extra meat as i thought they do not have anything to begin with and ended up not being... More

Staying in Shinkyogoku Shopping District

Neighborhood Profile
Shinkyogoku Shopping District
Those who delight in shopping and cuisine will find themselves at home in Shinkyogoku. Lauded and visited by locals for its Nishiki Market, where baskets of fragrant spices, dried fish, and just-fried foods are piled high along the snaking streets of its enclosed outdoor shopping spaces, Shinkyogoku is not only a hub for fresh fare, but also for fast fashion fixes. Trends-in-the-making can be spotted in the tall windows of several one-of-a-kind stores featuring local labels and modish boutiques. Arcades, outdoor concert spaces, mega department stores, and small, enchanting cafes have sprung up to accommodate the increasing traffic. Whether looking for souvenirs and kitsch on Shinkyogoku Street, or scoping out the massive food court and restaurant floor at Takashimaya Department store, there's something for every wallet or purse, and a buyer for every item.
