This is the most wonderful thing about Japanese cuisine, along with its being attractive and healthy. This place is in a charming location in the traditional part of the city along the river. Our group ate upstairs. The only problem was that we were a bit rushed because they were expecting another group after us.

Good food -- had a wonderful tuna and avocado carpaccio! Nice to eat at the counter. Can accommodate larger groups in a back room.

Having a dozen or so izakaya experiences under my belt before we stumbled across this place, I can say with confidence that it was my favourite of the lot. There was not one dish that we ordered that wasn't enjoyed. We had to come back for a second serving in our 6 nights in Kyoto just so we could try... More

(Western)-user-friendly place, without detracting from authenticity and from excellent quality food: sometimes it's nice to be able to read the menu.....Above average selection of wines. Reassuring presence of Japanese customers: definitely not a "tourist trap".

It was our second night in this glorious little alleyway area of Kyoto We saw the Italian flag and ventured in What a lovely surprise to be taken upstairs to a dining area overlooking the river It was fairyland The waiters were attentive , the wine crisp and the food delicious! Shame it's our last night here because we would... More

This restaurant stood out as there is a menu in English, the prices are reasonable & there is a room upstairs that overlooks the river. Portions were smaller than expected so next time I will order two dishes. Staff were helpful & friendly. Seems to cater more for westerners in the room that overlooks the river but there was a... Walking down this lovely alleyway looking for sustenance we chose this restaurant over a myriad of others simply because the menu seemed ok. Mistake. The restaurant has an excellent position on the river but the chefs have dumbed down the food and the result is a bland undertaking in japanese cuisine. Unfortunately the service was the same, disorganised and not... More

We were three people, one vegetarian, one true carnivore and a pescatarian and all of our taste buds were satisfied. Pontocho street was recommended to us by a taxi driver when we pointed out that we were on a budget of 2000 to 3000 yen per head for a meal. We popped into one and the other restaurant in the... At this moment Kyoto is holding the annual tanabata festival. Along the the Kamogawa river is illumination and lots of activity. During the summer you can eat on a kawadoko, a platform that stretches over the river bank. Several restaurants have this option, but me and my wife decided to have Italian food and enjoy the evening breeze of the... More

Highly recommend Mimasuya on Pontocho Street, Kyoto. Great service and beautiful views. You must try the beef wrapped in flat rice noodles, I can't remember what it's called but it was one of the most amazing Japanese dishes I have ever tried. Yum!
