At this moment Kyoto is holding the annual tanabata festival. Along the the Kamogawa river is illumination and lots of activity. During the summer you can eat on a kawadoko, a platform that stretches over the river bank. Several restaurants have this option, but me and my wife decided to have Italian food and enjoy the evening breeze of the... More

Highly recommend Mimasuya on Pontocho Street, Kyoto. Great service and beautiful views. You must try the beef wrapped in flat rice noodles, I can't remember what it's called but it was one of the most amazing Japanese dishes I have ever tried. Yum!

After walking up and down a couple of times the Pontocho street, we ended up by going to the Mimasuya. We felt tempted by the menu with plenty of traditional offers, mostly prepared with seasonal ingredients. We had to wait around 15 mins. since the place was busy. When we were taken to our room, we were pleased to see... More

Just came from this reataurant. It waa amazing! We ordered 5 different dishes (for 3 of us) Everything was very tasty! We thought it was going to be price because of the location but no they were very reasonably priced. One of the best meals we have ever had! As soon as you walk in you can see the chefs... More

Living near Kyoto, I've been going to this place for more than a decade now, especially when friends are visiting from overseas, and, for a hip, not too formal or overwhelming experience, with food that's imaginative if not so remarkable and service that's warm, it's hard to beat. You're sitting on a dreamy little lane, overlooking the ancient capital's eastern... More

We were in this place for the new year's eve, fond by case in the early afternoon and we reserve a table for the night. The table was with a view of the river in a very nice room. People don' t speak a lot of english but the menù is clear. I suggest to order this different small dishes... More

I stumbled on this place by coincidence and I'm really grateful. It was simply excellent. I went there 2 nights in a row just to not risk going somewhere else that wasn't that good. They serve this modern japanese food, with a gourmet tendency but price is not that high for what you get. Try the gin tonic as well.

Sometimes it is nice to have some non-Japanese food for a change. We found this little Italian on the famous Pontoco and received a very friendly welcome. You enter walking past the kitchen and can see food preparation which is comforting at times. We were seated right next to the window overlooking the river and served with excellent, simple food.

We stumbled on this after considering several other places. The food was excellent and innovative, modern Japanese. Most memorable were pork with leek sauce, noodles wrapped in beef, grilled eggplant with shrimp sauce, etc. Unusually, you can actually order a cocktail. Service was fine, and prices very reasonable considering the high quality of the food.

We were looking to have a nice meal out in Kyoto, somewhere a bit special without plastic food out front but without a Michelin star price tag. This place was perfect, it isn't overly formal and the service was a bit slow but the food was the best we've had in Japan (with the exception of the kaiseki in the... More
