Best udon in Kyoto, worth the wait

We arrived on Friday night around 7pm and probably more than 20 people were in front of us. We happened to be the last customers to be received in as right after our arrival, they brought out a sign to alert others not to queue for the night. We waited for around 45 mins to be seated. So winter was descending in Kyoto and the temperatures were dropping, what better thing is there to do but to queue up in the cold for piping hot, absolutely QQ/al dente udon! Don't worry about whether you'll make it if you are in the queue and it's near closing, management will bring out a sign to alert latecomers if they... More

Yamamotomenzo is worth the 90 minute wait on a cold Friday night that we endured before snagging one of the two tables in this small restaurant! The udon is chewy and plated beautifully, the accompanying grated yam or broth cooked to perfection. Tempura was also done well, the chicken tempura particularly substantial and satisfying. Bonus for the lovely staff who... More

Stand in line for one hour but it's very worth for homemade udon and very very polite staff. Price is reasonable, not expensive !

Great udon with chewy noodles in a flavorful broth. The place is small and fills up quickly, sometimes with a long line. English spoken. Inexpensive and great for lunch or quick casual dinner.

Tried the original burdock tempura udon and chicken tempura udon (hot). If you're not sure what burdock is, it reminds me of parsnip. So those looking for meat, this dish is not for you. That being said, I enjoyed the fresh battered burdock and I had the soup base slightly spicy. For me, the soup is equally important as the... More

We arrived at Yamamoto Menzo right after it opened and stood in line for an hour for this very popular udon joint in Kyoto. There were only about 20 seats in the house. And I can tell you that it's totally worth the wait. It is hands down the best udon noodle soup I've had in my life. The tempura... More

Delicious ramen! The place is a little hidden, but worth it if you find it! Although it is in japanese there is a small english menu and the staff will help you order from the machine and they take your ticket.

Two excellent noodle restaurants are right next to each other north of the zoo (not worth visiting) and east of the Heian Shrine and Garden (definitely worth visiting). One is Okakita and the other is Yamamoto Menzou. They both often have lines, but the night we went to the latter, there was no wait at all. This tiny restaurant is more... More

During my trip in Kyoto with my girlfriend, one dinner I was alone because she was very tired: then i searched a restaurant near my hotel and I found this great one! Noodles and tempura were great, cooks and owners were so nice too!

Staying in City Center

Neighborhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
