Worth the stop

After a long day of footing it around Kyoto we took Lonely Planet's advice and dropped in for an early dinner. The place had bar seating for about 8 and tatami seating for about 20. An English menu is available. We were served quickly and were very pleased with what was delivered. Of course we... read more

The udon here was utterly amazing. The food is fresh, tasty and utterly delicious. The restaurant is small and cosy. The service is very efficient.

I don't usually like udon noodles but was eager to try them here as everyone we met seemed to recommend the place. They were very tasty! Different from the gelatinous, flavourless ones you get in lots of places. We visited late on a Sunday afternoon so didn't have to queue for long. Service was mixed, some staff were friendly and... I don't really like udon at all and usually prefer ramen. But this restaurant has elevated udon into a main dish and the star of the restaurant which is remarkable! We ordered the recommended Omen Udon set with tempura and the dried shrimp udon. Both were excellent and warms the stomach and as other writers have suggested, a place to... More

We ate here on a chilly day before heading to Ginkakuji - perfection and the food was beyond delicious and one of our best meals in Kyoto - short walk to temple and philosophers walk.

I saw this place's post in several media. You have to expect a long waiting list (at least 40 minutes) but very worth it. The noodles are soft but elastic, and the soup tasted so good that i wanted more. If you want some spin on the soup, try the condiments. And make sure to try the tempuras too. When... More

We stopped by here after a trip to Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Restaurant is very quaint, staff is friendly, and the food is good! We ordered the omen noodles (home made udon noodles) with the tempura. The noodles were soft and delicious, tempura flaky and battered just the right amount. They give you some interesting condiments to add to your broth. A... More

I read about this restaurant on Lonely Planet and later noticed that it was also recommended by our JR rail pass book. The restaurant was a bit confusing to find initially but we asked a few people and located it eventually. It is very close to the Silver Temple. There was about a 10 minute wait -- it could have... My wife read about this place on trip advisor. After visiting Ginkakuji it took us a while to locate this place as there are no signage in English. The best landmark is that it is located near the car park. This is an excellent choice for lunch before embarking on the Philosophers walk. The place is rather small which is normal for Japanese eating... This is Freescale, seasonal Japanese food, no fuss and very good value if you choose one of the set meals. The udon noodles are plump, chewy and slippery, just right! And a speciality if the house. The accompaniments add texture and crunch and are just delightful. If you are hungry add the tempura which again relies on fresh ingredients and fast... More
