I asked my guide to do the honours of picking the restaurant we can have an early lunch after our tour of the Golden Pavillion. I was glad she chose Omen. I was never a big fan of Udon but was willing to go on a culinary adventure. I was not disappointed. The udon was very light but satisfying. They... More

After reading such great reviews about this place, I decided to pop in for a meal before starting the trek to Ginkakuji and the famed Path of Philosophers (rather overrated if you ask me, but s few quaint shops along the path). Presentation is exquisite. But I have had better noodles in less high profile places. The broth was not... More

We had had disappointing noodles on our trip before this but that all changed once we tasted the omen offering, with a range of vegetables to flavor the broth, plus sesame and tempura. Also excellent were several types of tofu. Cloudy cold sake to accompany the food was perfect. Sit upstairs for a table with chairs. There was a queue... More

Since returning from Japan, I can't stop thinking about this meal. We followed the recommendation in our guide book, like many, just off the Philosophers Trail. A great find, the food was superb. We had hot 'omen', the noodles, broth, sesame seeds and seven different types of vegetable, all beautifully presented. We had a side of tempura too, well worth... More

We stopped at Omen today towards the end of our trip on the Philosophers Walk. We are in our fourth week in Japan and this was probably the best meal I've had so far. It was delicious. I had a side of the grilled chicken with homemade spicy sauce - it was juicy and tender and very good. For a... More

Omen restaurant was recommend in our guide book and I am so happy we decided to stop there post our visit of Ginkakuji. The place seems very popular, even at the slightly later lunch hour when we arrived. There's floor seating on tatami mats on the ground floor and table seating on the top. We got a table on the... Felt like a very local, authentic place to eat but helpful instructions in English on how to enjoy the cold or hot noodles. Enough variety but not overwhelming menu.

Lovely house close to Ginkaku-ji. Classic interior, with a tatami mats and a bar area, with a reassuringly large local crowd (given its in guidebooks and close to a main temple). Simple noodles, hot broth, 7 vegetables and sesame, all delicious when mixed together. Good value, prompt service and recommended if in the area.

This places offers what seems like regular udon noodles, but they arent. Apart from the beauty of the plates when they are served, they are remarkably tasty. I like udon everywhere, but this place has something special- the delicious vegetables, the sesame, the noodles served separately from the broth - something about all of it together is just delicious. Dont... More

We were seated upstairs and had lovely service. The food was delicious and each dish memorable. I still think of the persimmon salad with green tea leaves and tofu dressing. Helpful staff for non-Japanese speakers.
