A Hidden Gem in Kyoto

What an amazing place for dinner and atmosphere! We found this great place after walking into another terrible venue (on the main strip of Kiyamachi St.) and deciding to look on TA for a better option. We're so glad we did! We decided on this restaurant due to a friend's recommendation. Upon arriving it was clear that the chef / front of house was either in a bad mood or did not like people - it seemed quite obvious that our arrival was an inconvenience. After ordering, I asked a number of questions such as what ingredients were in the salad... More

Look for the window and door which are made from Bamboo and Glass. When you enter you will be greeted by Ariel, the manager, in English with an international accent! Be guided by him and you will have the best flavoured best cooked meal. Really nice friendly and very knowledgable about japanese foods and drinks. Could have sat there all... More

Thanks to other reviewers on here we decided to try it out and I'm so glad we did. Not only was the waiter fluent in English (a first for us in 2 weeks), he was sympathetic to our Gaijin appetites. Delicious food, cosy and clean setting, great service.

This place is in Pontocho, off the famous alleyway. It is difficult to find as the signage is only in Japanese. We had almost given up when a kind native passerby offered to help and led us there. The experience is just as others on Tripadvisor have described it. The chef brought us an assortment of ingredients and cooked them... More

This was our last dinner in Kyoto. Having eaten at 3 other really good ones, we found Issian Pontocho to be rather average and did not meet our expectation. There's nothing wrong with it - we were seated at the counter, the chef cooked the food for us, we chose the Y3500 menu, and it was smoky. The meat selection... More

It's on a side street, only seats 24, and serves VERY fresh food. You should try some of the exotic dishes, but the chicken thighs, squid legs, and scallops are to duke for.

We decided not to do the set menu and rather focus on the meats. As you can imagine after a week in japan we have eaten quite a bit of rice so we didn't need to do the set menu which includes rice and dessert . The waitress and chef spoke just enough English to help. The menu is served... More

We really enjoyed our meal here. We had the menu that gave you some of everything, so we could try it all, and the waiter (owner?) was very helpful, for example in asking us if there were any bits of a chicken we'd prefer not to eat, and advising us on which sauce goes best with which meat. We felt... More

I was skeptical to come here based on some of the negative reviews below but glad we came. Myself along with my family 5 of us total (and one 2 yo) came here to dine. I will say that the restaurant is small and does get quite "smoky" when all the burners are going and you will leave the restaurant... More
