This type of restaurants are very hard to ome by. they have set menus. We had many items for the first time in our life. was presented in traditional japanese style and were sitted traditionally as well. You have to pay for the shrine although to get to this restaurant as it is inside the shrine. Parking will be reimbursed... More

This restaurant lies within the tenryu-Ji temple and serve food monks can have access to. The tatami room was spacious with traditional paper sliding door. The wooden beams within the room are decorated with golden insignia beautifully. We had our lunch with another Japanese lady who had such elegant manner with every one of her movements being so purposeful that... More

Shigetsu offers lovely vegetarian lunch course. You have the meal in the wonderful Tenryuji temple grounds and the food is delicious. We took the 3000 yen meal and it was a real feast. You pay 500 yen entrance but that is really worth it as the temple itself is beautiful. A great experience and a must do! We made reservations... More

This is inside the popular Tenryu-ji Temple, which is a large and lovely site. I would suggest booking ahead as they are only open a few hours and were turning people away when we were there. Two of us had an enormous tatami room to ourselves, which was nice but odd! Food was traditional shojin ryori, "monk's food," so all... More

My favourite meal in Kyoto so far. Food really is prepared by Buddhist monks (hubby stole a pic fm the kitchens before he was shushed away). We were a party of 5 and pre-booked via our guest house owner so we were lucky to have a room all to ourselves. The ¥3000 meal is definitely enough. Not a place to... More

It helps to ask where the restaurant is when you buy your tickets at the entrance to the gardens. We found it with a little help. We removed our shoes upon entering and paid the cashier before being seated. Each meal was 3,000 yen but well worth it. We sat on tatami mats in an open room with other patrons... More

For a long time I'd been wanting to try Buddhist vegetarian cooking where the meal preparation can be part of the daily contemplation. This is certainly thoughtful food and very delicious unlike many vegan meals in the west that can be dour. Service is fairly basic but the room is stunning with beautiful views out on to the gardens. It... More

This is a very unique and delicious experience. You sit on tatami mats on the floor in a lovely wood building that's part of the Tenryuji Temple (with views to its garden) and are served a tray of food consisting of several smallish vegan dishes, prepared by the temple monks, in beautiful red bowls. We (including my husband who is... More

Location: /Shigetsu restaurant is inside the temple garden in Tenryuji , Arashiyama ; pay entrance fee and ask cashier for directions to it. Reservations are not necessary; lunch only. Ambiance & menu: a multi.course vegan meal served with little ceremony and quickly on a tray. There were guided tour groups in other rooms; it's busy and popular. Dining rooms have... More
