Delicious food and an interesting experience.

This was actually our second-choice given that Shoraian was fully booked and a little out of the way, but definitely no regrets dining here. This was worth doing for the experience of eating sitting on the floor inside a temple garden. The day we visited there was only one menu option available but luckily this was the one we wanted anyway with 7 different dishes. The dishes range from strange to stranger and some of them we still have no idea what they were.... More

This place was recommended by one of my vegetarian friends when visiting Tenryuji in Arashiyama, Kyoto. It's inside a garden in the temple so you first have to pay 500 yen to get into the garden and the 3000 yen for the meal. A tad pricey but definitely worth it as you get to visit the garden which are now... More

Totally worth the trip out of centre of town to visit the restaurant! Stunning presentation, food prepared with immaculate attention to detail, very good value for money, situated in wonderful temple grounds, on a sunny day could spend the whole afternoon walking around and still more to see. This was a very special meal and can read info there about... More

Located within the grounds of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Tenryuji Temple in Arashiyama, Shogetsu is a wonderful place to have a truly Japanese experience of a shojin ryori meal, or what is known as a traditional Buddhist temple cuisine. Listed as one of Kyoto's best vegetarian restaurants, Shogetsu is only open for lunch from 11am to 2pm. My... More

Read on tripadvisor that the meal was very good. Now that I have tried it. I finally understood why so many people say that the meal was amazing. So much different taste & textures & unexpected wows from this meal. Please do give it a try. We had the 3000 yen set.

We had many items for the first time in our life. was presented in traditional japanese style and were sitted traditionally as well. You have to pay for the shrine although to get to this restaurant as it is inside the shrine. Parking will be reimbursed... More

This restaurant lies within the tenryu-Ji temple and serve food monks can have access to. The tatami room was spacious with traditional paper sliding door. The wooden beams within the room are decorated with golden insignia beautifully. We had our lunch with another Japanese lady who had such elegant manner with every one of her movements being so purposeful that... More

Shigetsu offers lovely vegetarian lunch course. You have the meal in the wonderful Tenryuji temple grounds and the food is delicious. We took the 3000 yen meal and it was a real feast. You pay 500 yen entrance but that is really worth it as the temple itself is beautiful. A great experience and a must do! We made reservations... More
