Well prepared vegetarian meal served in traditional style + the Tenryuji Temple

This temple is beautiful and I would recommend eating here. The food was delicious and I was excited to finally get an all vegetarian meal. There is clearly a lot of care taken in the food preparation. It was also a lot of fun to eat on the tatami floor with other people in the room.

I came here after being recommended by a friend to try "monk" food. It is simply delicious! At the time, only the Yuki option was available, but it was more than enough. There are several dishes of food, including tofu, clear soup, a soup made with tofu, cucumber salad, steamed veggies, pickles, eggplant with miso, and rice. It was very... More

If you want to experience the traditional Buddhist monk vegan food that Kyoto is famous for (shojin-ryori is the name for the food in Japanese) then Tenryuji Shigetsu inside Tenryu-ji temple (500 yen entry) near the Sogen Garden is the place to go. It is not immediately obvious that the building which houses Shigetsu is an eatery but persevere –... More

This was actually our second-choice given that Shoraian was fully booked and a little out of the way, but definitely no regrets dining here. This restaurant is located in the Tenryu-Ji Temple in Arashiyama, right ahead from the ticketing entrance (signs were not too clear when we were there, but people were helpful enough to show us the way). We... More

This was worth doing for the experience of eating sitting on the floor inside a temple garden. The day we visited there was only one menu option available but luckily this was the one we wanted anyway with 7 different dishes. The dishes range from strange to stranger and some of them we still have no idea what they were.... More

This place was recommended by one of my vegetarian friends when visiting Tenryuji in Arashiyama, Kyoto. It's inside a garden in the temple so you first have to pay 500 yen to get into the garden and the 3000 yen for the meal. A tad pricey but definitely worth it as you get to visit the garden which are now... More

Totally worth the trip out of centre of town to visit the restaurant! Stunning presentation, food prepared with immaculate attention to detail, very good value for money, situated in wonderful temple grounds, on a sunny day could spend the whole afternoon walking around and still more to see. This was a very special meal and can read info there about... More

Located within the grounds of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Tenryuji Temple in Arashiyama, Shogetsu is a wonderful place to have a truly Japanese experience of a shojin ryori meal, or what is known as a traditional Buddhist temple cuisine. Listed as one of Kyoto's best vegetarian restaurants, Shogetsu is only open for lunch from 11am to 2pm. My... More
