Rather than a restaurant, this is a traditional temple offering the famous 'shojin ryori', vegetarian Buddhist meals. There are three options: Yen 3,000; 5,000; and, I believe, 7,000. We took the 5,000 option. We arrived for lunch and were seated in a separate space (reservations seemed to be recommended, but I believe they were not necessary). It was relatively 'simple'... More

Please see my full comprehensive review here on my blog: http://twotravellingpassports.com/2014/07/28/shojin-ryori/ I highly recommend this restaurant as one of the types of cuisines to try in Kyoto! The Tenryu-ji landscape garden (which is right beside the restaurant within the temple grounds) is also beautiful!

The food and drinks were absolutely delicious and was served in a beautiful annex of the temple. Customers have to sit on the tatami floor and I have to say it really adds to the experience. In addition, the bill was pretty low, which made this lunch even tastier.

Delicious, multi-course vegan meal in a semi-private tatami room set within a beautiful garden. We had the 3000 yen meal -- it offered plenty of variety and was quite filling (per our hotel, the 5000 and 7000 yen meals must be ordered in advance and must also be ordered by at least 2 people in your party). A good lunch... More

We visited Shigetsu for lunch after seeing the reviews here on Tripadvisor, and we were not disappointed. The setting is stunning and peaceful, set amidst a UNESCO World Heritage site. The food itself was outstanding, delicate yet flavourful. The miso eggplant was the best I have had, and the various vegan dishes served were each memorable, including a light as... More

If you're looking for an authentic traditional Japanese dining experience, go here. Set within the beautiful gardens of the Tenryuji temple complex in Arashiyama, vegan meals on red trays are served to cross-legged patrons on bamboo floors. You are bound to encounter many locals, and perhaps a few tourists. At the time we went, we didn't see any other tourists... More

One of the best vegetarian meals I've ever had. Delicious range of excellent dishes well presented, with the option of sitting on the floor or at a table. Thoroughly recommend here for lunch if you're visiting Tenryu-ji temple.

We had lunch at Shigetsu when we visited Arashiyama. Our hotel had told us that we don't require reservations, but it looks like they do have an option of making a reservation. The entire experience was nice - "communal" seating on mats, beautifully presented food and of course, the food itself was yummy. My wife loved the miso-glazed eggplant, while... More

We recently visited Kyoto as part of a large group and escaped for lunch on our own, one of the days. We went across town to Tenryuji Zen Temple in Higahsiyama ... on its own worth a visit for the fabulous garden which was spectacular as the autumn colours were just reaching their peak. Adjacent to the gardens is the... More

I visited Tenryuji several times during my visits to Kyoto, and on my final visit I decided to have lunch at Shigetsu, the Zen restaurant on the temple grounds. Zen cuisine is highly prescribed; each meal must include five tastes (salty, sweet, sour, bitter, spicy), five colors (red, white, black, green, and yellow), and five cooking methods (frying, boiling, preparation...
