Beautiful, delicious and friendly

We were lucky to be able to have our new year meal at Kinmata. Three of us had a wonderful dinning experience. No problem with english, they served each course and explained the food to us. The owner was so excited to show us the rare snow in their beautiful garden. People told us it's unusual to... read more

I was just wondering down the Teramachi and Miyukicho dori area looking for a dinner and found this gem. As I was in Kyoto, I wanted something unique to Kyoto and this place turned out to be exactly that. The entrance to the restaurant was somewhat intimidating little door in a little dimly lit traditional Kyoto style. There was a... More

This was our first meal at Kinmata. Actually, this was our first kaiseki dinner in Kyoto. The restaurant is conveniently located about a half a block from Shijo shopping area. The ambiance of this restaurant is very nice. The kaiseki dinner menu comes in six price points. We opted for the mid range dinner. The incredibly beautiful multi-course dinner was... More

Before traveling to Kyoto, I asked my Japanese colleague to recommend a place that serve authentic Japanese cuisine. He suggested that I should try Kinmata. It is not just for the food, but for its Kyo-machiya style inn that have been in existence for many generations. I met the owner who is helming the fort now and was told that... More

The most tenderest part of the fresh spring bamboo that melts in your mouth prepared in three different fashion is what I remember most about our dinner there. I can understand why some people would be confused what is so special about this meal that is worth 200 USD after service fee, but I was impressed by there creative use... More

The ingredients are always the freshest of the season and beautifully presented. Ukai-san is a gifted chef and his staff is wonderful. You can request your meal in a tatami room that overlooks their lovely, tranquil garden. We enjoyed everything about our experience!

I read the rave reviews on the ryokan and the excellent kaiseiki that they offer - decided to try the kaiseiki. Booked a 12,000 Yen ++ dinner kaiseiki each and was sorely disappointed. We had the dinner table settings (not the tatami dinning) and the ambience was totally wrong. The area was worned out. The presentation of the food was... More
