My husband and I came in December when it was relatively empty. It took us two tries to find this restaurant because the map on the tripadvisor app is incorrect. The restaurant is actually located in between the Bell Tower and the Drum Tower. First, go down the escalator. Then, just past the Starbucks, go up some stairs and it... More

This Xian restaurant is known across China for its dumplings. There are two sites in Xian, we went to the one downtown near the Bell Tower. A little help may be needed for those who don't speak Chinese. At the first floor, you can order a limited set of dumplings a la carte. But you probably want to go upstairs... More

IF you like dumplings, this is the place to go. They are fresh, brought to you steaming hot and the varieties seem endless. It is quite the experience. We had a fixed setting which i think is typical for most tourists. The amount of food was overwhelming. Just when we thought that was it, in came two more plates. I... More

We visited this restaurant as part of a Viking River Cruise tour. The dinner and menu had been organized ahead of time. As we were a group of well over 100 people, the tables were setup for us prior to our arrival Each table was well appointed and attractive. Upon each dumpling entrée being provided to our tables, another person... More

OK having read all the bad reviews here, we ended up going anyhow, with low expectations and were very pleasantly surprised. Perhaps we got lucky. The waitress spoke neglish, ordering was simple, the beer was more tasty than the usual Tsing Tao (I thiink a special edition) and the food after a slow star kept on coming until I now... More

Good points: Wide range of dumplings to try, some were ok and all fresh. You get other dishes too and the special soup to finish the meal. They make the dumplings look like what's inside rabbit for rabbit apple for apple. Staff helpful (we did have a guide with us), toilets were clean Other factors, we had better dumplings (taste... I am residing in China and have visited many dumpling restaurants. This one is worth the money and location is perfect. The dumplings are made into shapes to match their filling: chicken, lotus blossom, duck, leaf (cabbage), etc. The soup was hot and well-seasoned. The vegetables were crisp, not greasy, and nicely flavored. Service was typical. Price was reasonable at... More

The staff was rude. When I asked for English menu I was talked back down with attitude "No English menu". I felt unwelcome from the beginning. The dumplings were on average nothing that I would have wanted to eat again, and mind me I love dumplings and ate them all over the world including Japan.

We recently went to this restaurant as part of a Viking River Cruises tour of China. Xi'an is suppose to be the dumpling capital of China and Defachang is supposed to be the best dumpling restaurant in Xi'an - the other ones must be dire. It is hard ( and perhaps unfair) to ascribe western tastes to eastern food, but... More

First impression it has the charm of a railway station, but we gave it a try. Unfortunately the first impression was right, untidy tables, the chopsticks been in a box on the table, the sauces been in untidy containers. Service and presentation was loveless. Skip this one there are better restaurants in Xi'An.
