Good points: Wide range of dumplings to try, some were ok and all fresh. You get other dishes too and the special soup to finish the meal. They make the dumplings look like what's inside rabbit for rabbit apple for apple. Staff helpful (we did have a guide with us), toilets were clean Other factors, we had better dumplings (taste... I am residing in China and have visited many dumpling restaurants. This one is worth the money and location is perfect. The dumplings are made into shapes to match their filling: chicken, lotus blossom, duck, leaf (cabbage), etc. The soup was hot and well-seasoned. The vegetables were crisp, not greasy, and nicely flavored. Service was typical. Price was reasonable at... More

The staff was rude. When I asked for English menu I was talked back down with attitude "No English menu". I felt unwelcome from the beginning. The dumplings were on average nothing that I would have wanted to eat again, and mind me I love dumplings and ate them all over the world including Japan.

We recently went to this restaurant as part of a Viking River Cruises tour of China. Xi'an is suppose to be the dumpling capital of China and Defachang is supposed to be the best dumpling restaurant in Xi'an - the other ones must be dire. It is hard ( and perhaps unfair) to ascribe western tastes to eastern food, but... More

First impression it has the charm of a railway station, but we gave it a try. Unfortunately the first impression was right, untidy tables, the chopsticks been in a box on the table, the sauces been in untidy containers. Service and presentation was loveless. Skip this one there are better restaurants in Xi'An.

We read good reviews about this place, so we decided to give it a try. What a huge MISTAKE. We went for the dumpling banquet as recommended, but the dumplings were VERY dry and tasteless. They looked and tasted like they'd been left on the shelf for hours; not freshly cooked whatsoever. There was no tea available either, so we... More

I think that should say it all. However, what was surprising is that people still keep going. The 18 course dumpling banquet was really a disappointment. I just can't believe how badly made the dumplings were, and actually quite disgusting. I live in Hong Kong and have been eating dumplings for 20 years, and I feel I have some idea... More

Really not impressed with the whole process. The so called family meal is definitely not a good choice. Most of the dumplings are the kind we do not like. There is no description or choice. It is very pricey compared to other choices. We do not like the sales pitch either.

Suggest you pass this restaurant, the quality of food they serve can not even remotely be justified by the price they charge - the Muslim quarter is just around the corner and the foods are a lot better there. If you have to go for whatever reason, suggest you avoid the set banquet menu and order from the a la... More

Ate at the downstairs section. Very difficult to understand how to order. They kept directing us upstairs to dumpling buffet but we did not want that. Finally asked another western tourist how they ordered. Order dumplings at the counter and then sidecdishes come by on carts and you pay separately. After eating a lot of Asian dumplings in other cities,... More
