We had seen this restaurant on a travel channel program and decided to try it. Dumplings are always good, but even better when shaped into animals! To get the animal shaped ones, you need to order one of the set menus. There's a meat one, a seafood one, etc. Ala carte ordering is possible but the shapes are traditional ones,... More

Yes, the restaurant is old and has a long and respectable history, but the food was nothing special, and the servings are small. We went with one of the set banquets, not the cheapest either (which was the one the waitress recommended - the more expensive sets have additional courses added). The bill for 2 people was almost 500 RMB... More

There was absolutely no clue in English that the restaurant we ventured into was De Fa Chang. Fortunately, we had asked a hotel desk clerk to write down the characters. It's in front of the JinJiang Hotel right on Bell Tower square. Go up to the second floor for the real thing. If you don't want the banquet, then you... More

There are limited reasons to travel to Xi'an. It's a substantial sized city and has it's share of antiquities. But it does boast of the Terra Cotta Warriors museum. The archeological site started in 1974 has unearthed many thousands of hand made earthen warriors meticulously put together from bits and pieces. It is fantastic. But this review is about food... This is something of an 'institution' in Xian and is popular with locals and tourists alike. Very close to the Bell and Drum tower, go for a wander in the surrounding area after your meal to walk off the calories! Dumplings are a specialty of the Xian area and the second floor of the de fa Chang is the place... More

We were looking forward to eating at this famous place in Xian, but it did not meet our expectations. First, the place needs a nice face lift in and out....it is very old, and not in good condition (i.e. carpets, bathrooms, etc.) Its a big noisy place, but we were placed in a private room-the window was open (90 degrees... My son's favourite food are dumplings, so this "dumpling-only" dinner was his highlight. A lot of different types, but we have had much better dumplings in other restaurants around. Cold atmosphere. No English (compensated by a lot of smiles) by the dedicated waitress in the dedicated anonymous room.

We visited this restaurant based on local recommendations and as many of the other reviewers had the dumpling banquet which gives you a variety a different types of dumplings. We had some trouble finding this on the menu as it wasn't offered on the english version but with some simple english phrases we were able to be understood and ordered... More

I was there on a business trip and we had the dumpling banquet, meaning we sample I don't know how many different kinds of dumplings, savory one, sweet ones, spicy ones... It was very interesting and most of them tasted great. The place was rather crowded and noisy, waitresses very busy but efficient. You shouldn't miss going here to taste... More

If you are on vacation in Xi'an and want to have some fun, go to De Fa Chang with a group of friends and get the dumpling banquet. It is not an authentic, street food, Michelin star rated experience. If that's what you want you should be eating on the street in the Muslim Quarter or going somewhere more expensive.... More
