Read about The Idiot in travel guides, Tripadvisor and wherever. Duly went and we were disappointed. Some dishes really good but overall we got the impression that now that people (read: foreigners) know about them they make less effort (although maybe with foreigners in particular). We had very surly service (a bit more surly than one finds in Russia generally)... More

Old-fashioned, dark, russian menu, felt very literary. The food was simple, russian and delicious. I had the russian stew, which was savory, rich and perfectly balanced. My company had vegetarian patties from cabbage and broccoli, and they were also thoroughly delicious: fresh, fluffy and tasty.

Having visited this restaurant back in 2010, it was nice to have an opportunity for a return visit. The place was as fun as I remembered it - unique décor and a great selection of very well prepared traditional Russian dishes. The place felt very welcoming on a cold late October night. The service was attentive, yet we were allowed... More

Good vegetarian options, the vegetable roulet and the podgarka were particularly delicious. We all loved our vodka shot. One of the nicest places to eat in St Petersburg and very reasonable. They do fish, and some meat as well.

We had an amazing lunch at this restaurant. The food was some of the best we had in St Petersburg. The service was very friendly and we really enjoyed the FREE vodka shot before lunch! The Julienne with wild mushrooms and borsch (just name two) was delicious. Don't me an idiot and miss the restaurant while you are in St Petersburg!

Maybe everything tastes better after a shot of vodka, but for whatever reason, it was a very relaxed and tasty meal. The mushroom soup with crusty dark rye bread was exceptional. My husband enjoyed the beef stroganoff. The cozy surroundings made for a romantic meal.

Fun restaurant. Interesting menu choices at reasonable prices. Service was good, too, though not many customers the night my group went. Recommend the beef stroganoff (a standard) and the Schee soup.

I visited St. Petersburg a few years ago, on a cruise stop over and we had arranged for private visas, because we have friends in the city and wanted to meet them privately rather than be bound by the tours. We met our friends straight after arriving at Café Idiot, for vodka y siljotka (vodka and herring). A lovely old... More

Really enjoyed our meal here, I had beef stroganoff with mash and a larger with a free shot of vodka. The staff were helpful and polite and the ambience was enjoyable. Would go again!
