This is my favoriite restaurant in all of Russia. I come back here on every visit. If its location were more central it would certainly be in the TripAdviser top 10. As it is, it's a 5-10 minute ($7) taxi ride from the centre - but WELL worth it. The specialties are old style Russian food. their stroganoff is to... More

We went here for lunch and it was quite quiet. We had good service and the food is very much old fashioned home-cooked which I think suite Russian cuisine very well. A good menu of meat, fish, pancakes and dumplings with a good selection of beer and wine. The decor is very atmospheric with lots of old pictures and books.... More

Not sure why this currently ranks as an "expensive" restaurant on Trip Advisor, value-wise, it's much better than 50% of decent places in the city but unfortunately, the food itself isn't that great. It's hard to pick faults but it's just a very very average meal with ambience that is full of tourists that are brought in big groups because... More

Truly outstanding Russian cuisine - in particular the pelmeniye (Russian 'ravioli'), the best i have ever tasted. The decor is 19th century Russian country house- but not overdone. The service is impeccable and friendly. We turned up half an hour before the kitchen was supposed to close, but they gave us a great meal, with good grace, and didn't cut... More

We visited Chekhov for a taste of traditional Russian food given the Lonely Planet top choice endorsement and we were not disappointed. The interior had an antique feel to it and must have been quite grand when it first opened its doors years ago. Nonetheless, it was comfortable and clean. Service was great and our waitress spoke good english, which... More

Exceptionally mediocre food, surpassed only by the rudeness of the staff. As noted by a previous reviewer, service was sullen and painfully slow; unacceptable with 4 waiters to 3 tables. Pan seared foie-gras to start was good, but both the salad and pelmeni's were ordinary. Crispy potato pancakes were void of crispiness and sat in a puddle of mushrooms. The... More

This restaurant was recommended by our guidebook, by my Russian friend and Tripadvisor. We had high expectations but unfortunately we were disappointed with both service and food. For starters we had pelmeni and marinated mushrooms. Pelmeni was great but the mushrooms were way too acid and strong in taste. It would be a great side dish, but as a starter... More

Our group ate here as part of a tour and had the fixed menu of salad, salmon and dessert. Nothing bad, but also nothing impressive about this place. The dining room is small and rustic, but charming. If you are looking for a simple lunch, I recommend this place. Just don’t have high expectations.

Chekhov is part of a chain of restaurants named after authors. It’s good enough, though at $100 for a meal for two with only two glasses of wine, quite expensive. I found the white mushroom pickles awfully salty. The duck pelmeny were great. The beef stroganoff was good too. Everyone was nice although they forgot to bring the halibut in... More
