Excellent food, service and ambience.

The friendliness and attentiveness of the staff is what you would notice as soon as you step into the restaurant. The menu and the courses that we ordered is what one would expect in a fine dining restaurant. And the service was impeccable.

Myself and my husband have frequented the 1885 regularly over the last decade. We like the atmosphere and the food. Unfortunately the most recent visit was disappointing except for redeeming feature of Mr Philip's excellent piano playing. He greeted us on arrival while there was no other staff in sight for at least five minutes. We were seated near patio... More

Reasonable English Afternoon Tea less than MYR 70. Always go there when I am in Penang. However, service quality and food quality have started to decline progressively over the years.

1885 is supposed to be fine dining at a 5-star hotel. However, atmosphere is not impressive, lighting too bright, ambience not fitting the category of luxury. Food quality is rather disappointing. Service is ok but not impressive. You can find a much better choice opposite to the hotel.

Excellent presentation and service, a reasonable 'european' menu selection and a lovely colonial-elegant venue. Situated in the Eastern and Oriental Hotel complex, this restaurant offers London food at London prices with a limited but adequate wine list. We celebrated a birthday here, and wanted something special - this provided a perfect solution!

We were "served" high tea in a large canteen with absolutely no atmosphere and no enthusiasm. The table had a plastic table mat for each person, the food took 35 minutes to arrive and was so bland, one supermarket bread sandwich between 2 people, I have no idea what was on it, absolutely no taste. About 6 tasteless pastries. A... More

Intimate atmosphere in two small and quiet but bright rooms in the E&O hotel. Came here for afternoon tea for 3 at 2PM. Service is from 2-5PM. Had precisely the experience we were looking for. Large choice of loose tea was offered with cream and sugar; finger sandwiches (7 each, I think), scones + jam, served on a tiered platter,... More

The service was brilliant, and the food all we expected reading previous comments. The chateaubriand was so good that waitress could hardly slice because it wobbled so much under the knife, absolutely superb in quality, and of course cooking. The starters of Duck Salad and Escargot pretty good too. The Crepe Suzette ant the end was absolute brilliant, with a... More

Whist staying in E&O we treated ourselves to a meal at this beautiful restaurant and boy are we glad we did. The food was exceptional. We have dined at three hat restaurants recently and this meal would compare. Fresh ingredients, great wine selection and lovely ambience. Well done!

Wow! My husband and I went here for our wedding anniversary on a monday night. We were one of three tables there but it felt like we had the restaurant to ourselves. The service was faultless and each course was amazing. The wine list had a good list of international wines. The lobster bisque and the lobster thermidor were must... More
