I found the food here surprisingly dull, and was disappointed after the rave reviews. The beef was good, but then it is in many Takayama restaurants, but it's very expensive (also true of all the other places of course) and here came with a limited selection of vegetables and rather measly pickles. We also tried a butter yaki with chicken... More

Small place just off a main street which seemed quiet when we arrived but soon busied up. The place seemed to be family run by the older couple who were very friendly and helpful, multilingual and had an english menu plus the odd word of Polish for my partner. Most people were here for the beef, and self-cooked over charcoal... More

Good little place on a quiet street. Amazing miso chicken stew and nice people with great atmosphere. 14 to 16 dollars if you stay away from hida beef. Worth a try.

My partner had the hoba beef, and I had the vegetables cooked the same way. The owner was friendly and spoke enough English to accommodate my vegetarian requests. Not too pricey. I'd recommend it.

There are signs everywhere  pointing you there with the lonely planet logo next to it. Us and a couple of other groups were brought to it by the review in the monkey planner. I don't know if it was just me but it felt a bit fishy. A bit like a tourist trap. The thing is the food was not... More

At first you would think this must be the best restaurant for Hida Beef in Takayama just judging by the long queue outside the restaurant, but on closer look you would have noticed that the people in the crowd seem to know each other well. Yes they were all from tour groups of various countries. As for our group of... More

We had a very interesting dining experience here - most of the stuff we ate came ready to be cooked to our table. They then lit up a couple of live burners on our table and let the food cook live in front of us. Now this was great, except that we were asked to do a bunch of things... More

paying 3000 yen just for self cooking (maybe I should say trying not to burn) 120g of hida beef + a miso soup is really expensive! Honestly I have serious doubts that any local family would come here to eat traditional food! Maybe this could be Takayama style of cooking the beef, but from my point of view is a... More

While I was visiting Takayama my friends in Tokyo told me that I had to try the local specialty: Houbamiso Beef. At Suzuya they serve a great dish. But you can also get Shabu-Shabu and other beef dishes. The owner speaks English and is very helpful with suggesting menu items.

We visited Suzuya on a chilly winter night. The Hida beef sirloin is absolutely top notched. The beef sizzling on the hot plate was packed with flavour while retaining its original juiciness. It was so succulent that it literally melted in our mouths. Besides that, the sukiyaki and Hoba miso was just okay for us. We felt that the miso... More
