Not bad, but could be better

Walked past the night before & it was buzzing. We returned for lunch the next day. 700 pesos for a chicken breast, salad and a few drinks. Pretty pricy for a backpacker budget but it was nice and the portions were an ok size, I wouldn't say large, but we shared them anyway and went away satisfied.

Big dishes with tons of food. Loved the tripes and blood sausage. The meat was ok. It came a little bit cold.

We chose this restaurant on our first night in Colonia, because it was close to our hotel & looked busy (usually a good indicator of quality & value). Food was ok (1 steak, 1 chicken) & service was good, as was the ambiance, but there are much more characterful places for not many more pesos in the proper old town.

The two of us shared a tasty lomo (steak) con guarnición (in this case mixed salad), a bottle of water (500ml) and basket of bread. Total price: 455 pesos de Uruguay ~ 19us$ ~16€

I have eaten here every time I've been to Colonia. I'm surprised the restaurant is so far down the ratings list, as the restaurant seems to have a lot of good word of mouth and is recommended a lot. Everyone I've ever gone here with has really, really enjoyed their food.

El Portón (The Gate) was recommended by our hotel and it was an outstanding choice. My wife and I liked it so well the first day, we returned on the second day of our visit to Colonia del Sacramento. Note, however, that portions are BIG. On our second visit, we shared the tenderloin (lomo) and it was plenty for both... More
