We had grilled smoked ribs and cucumber with bean paste, along with the tofu. They were beautifully presented and delicious and the tofu was magnificent, quite unlike any I've ever had: quite hot, very strong with Sichuan pepper, and with layers of flavour. RMB116 with 2 large bottles of beer, in palatial surroundings.

I went to eat their famous Mapo Doufu yesterday evening, and in respect to the quality of the food, I was not disappointed. The spicy flavor of the soup combined with the richness of the tofus made it quite savory. It was one of the best mapo doufus I've ever had. In respect to the service, however, I was extremely... We were staying at the Sheraton around the corner and I hate to admit it, but in a city with hundreds of excellent choices we actually went both nights that we were in Chengdu. Soooo yummy! I am a Mapo Dofu convert - it was spicy, deliciousness. The boiled beef was also a winner. But the unexpected star was the... More

We followed Google Maps and accidentally ended up at the kitchen entrance (in the alleyway). We peeked in and saw a disgusting kitchen; caked over in grease and mold. The alleyway itself seemed to be slicked over in whatever they chuck out late at night, and workers were squatting in the dingy, dirty alleyway smoking. But we had our hearts... More

Our tour guide was a regular here. He reassured us that the food would be good. He was right. It was a busy day at lunch but the wait was not too long. Service was a bit slow due to shortage of staff but it was worth the time and effort. We had 4 different dishes, a pot of tea,... More

Nobody spoke English,so I was very happy I'd memorised 'Mapo Tofu' and 'Kung Pao Chicken' in Chinese so was able to order. The food did not disappoint, but don't expect gourmet food - it is hearty fare for a good price.

I am not sure about the address but the one we went to was the original. It takes time to get accustomed to Sichuan pepper. We can take a lot of spice but this was unique. The other dishes were also good, the service was quick and it is very good value for money.

On a grey and gloomy Chengdu afternoon lunch in this place turned out to be the highlight of our trip. The food is fantastic and very moderately priced. For only 35 kuai per person we had rich servings of mapu doufu, mala fish, fried beef, cold noodles, chili chicken and seasonal vegetables. Really good food, decent service and a nice... More

First let me say that according to all the sources I've read, there's only one Chen Mapo Doufu restaurant, which is said to be where the Mapo doufu was invented long ago, and it's located on Xi YuLong. This Chen Map Doufu is the only one on TripAdvisor and the address's Jiefang Lu, not the same. Probably this Jiefang Lu... More

Excellent meal and great value, we had about 5 dishes including Map Dofu and rice, a few beers and it cost 120 RMB for the whole lot.
