Gourmet food on the edge of Angkor Wat Temple

At the conclusion of my work on two construction projects in Shanghai and Seoul, and with time at a premium, we booked a guided tour to Cambodia; the main purpose being a visit to the Angkor Wat Temple in Siem Reap. As part of the booking, in addition to transport, hotel and a personal guide... read more

After getting to Angkor Wat pretty early in the morning, we were ready for a break away from the noisy tourists and we found just that at Chez Sophea. Matthieu was a great host and the food was superb! We had their set menu and were not disappointed. Our bill was under $50 including couple of espressos. The relax atmosphere... More

Unlike most of the other reviewers, we had dinner at this restaurant and enjoyed it very much. It is right next to Angkor Wat and surrounded by other restaurants, but at 7 p.m., the other restaurants were mostly closed and it was quiet and delightful to talk with Matthiu and to enjoy the food. The duck rillettes which Matthiu made... More

Chez Sophea is very near to Angkor Wat, but it's tucked in a quiet corner behind the over-crowded tourists restaurants where tour groups crowd in for an Angkor beer and some mediocre version of a local specialty. Take the few extra steps to Chez Sophea and you won't be sorry. Matthieu is a fantastic host who will welcome you and... More

My first review: My friend, girlfriend and I stopped here after touring Angkor Wat and were extremely impressed. The owner was very welcoming and casual about our ordering. The restaurant is open air and directly across the street from the temple, alongside several other restaurants that offer the more traditional Khymer fare. We all ordered from the prix fixe menu... We had a delightful lunch in this open air restaurant that is just outside the moat of Angkor Wat. The owner, Matthieu, is an engaging and charming host, who used to be a professional photographer in Paris before visiting Cambodia 25 years ago and deciding to stay. Chez Sophea has a relaxed atmosphere, and is the perfect place to relax... More

We had a friend recommend this place and we were so glad we went! We went for lunch today after visiting some temples. Matthieu gave very personalized attention and recommended some FANTASTIC fish dishes, one amok and one thing I don't recall but it was great. We got the $18 set price menu which included an amazing salad (the kind... More

After nearly being temple-d out (5am until noon) we stopped at Chez Sophea for lunch. We ended up having a great 2hr lunch. Matthiu was fun - delightfully brusque, high quality bar for food and service. I loved my spiced fish - delicately flavored, but still filling. The chocolate mousse was amazing. They put so much energy into the perfectly... More

Our hotel’s list of recommended restaurants included this little gem. When we found Angkor Café was packed to the rafters, we set out to find Chez Sophea as our ‘Plan B’. You need to keep going to the very end of the row of local eateries and we were a bit taken aback at its ordinary appearance, and somewhat concerned... More

It was definitively one of the best grilled fish I have ever eaten in my life. The mix of aromas and subtle flavors exploding in my mouth was an exiting experience. Pair with a beautiful selected rose wine made for a perfect afternoon to remember for a long time.
