Classic funky independent cafe

My son and I had a quick breakfast at the Black Sheep while in Amherst for a drive-by tour of UMass Amherst's campus. We initially were thinking we might end up at the Lone Wolf, but even at 10am, the line was out the door and the wait was 30 minutes. We walked another fifty steps down Main... read more

It's been a few years since I've visited Amherst and I'm heading there with my son soon. I'm so glad the Black Sheep Cafe is still there. I visited it for the first time easily 20 years ago and have been there a number of times since. Love its funky atmosphere, delicious sandwiches and irresistible desserts and can't wait to... More

My flight out was at 2 pm, so I stopped by in the morning to get a take-out sandwich for lunch as there's not much at the Hartford Airport. They helped me choose a sandwich that would travel well, and wrapped it up extra well so it wouldn't drip in my bag. When I ate it a few hours later... More

Croissants and other pastries are okay at this place, but the service sucks. Like many other reviewers who said something to the same effect, the attendants are impolite and lack even the basic customer service skills. I wanted to exchange a dirty paper cup that was full of coffee grounds from their coffee, and they wouldn't do it! Instead they... More

Good food and coffee, but WOW, it is expensive! It's definitely a hipster and liberal hang out (hey, it's Amherst afterall!) place. Seating is good and I hear that they have live music on Friday nights.

Went for brunch with three others. Finding a table for four people was a challenge. I stood next to a table while the three others ordered the food. You wait in line, order food, and then wait for them to call your order. Some people take their food out and others eat in. On a Sunday morning, it is really... More

Great little cafe with a long Amherst history. Good sandwiches, excellent desserts. Nice place to hang out.

We had dessert here and came back the next evening for more - super tasty pies! My husband was very happy with the blueberry & their cookies were fantastic! I made sure I bought some for the flight home. Went there in the am for coffee and unfortunately not the best cup of joe I have ever had - Dunkin'... More

Went in with my family to get some pastries for the ride home. The pastries looked wonderful and were pretty good but nothing super special. They were VERY expensive. The atmosphere of the place is nice on the inside. It was very busy when we went and it was quite a long wait. I will go back but for more... More

This place was very friendly, but also very plain. Food was okay. Nothing special. I ordered a club sandwich, bread was tough but not hard. Turkey was dry, and lettuce and tomato were limited. The sandwich needed more dressing or mayonnaise to make it tasty. My son ordered 1/2 a buffalo chicken sandwich. Which I thought would be plenty even... More
