Narrow (Estrecha), yes, but also simple and unpretentious, with friendly, patient, young and enthusiastic staff who are serious but not snobby about food, and most speak English. They clearly love working here. It's a great lunch experience. In a city known for its beef, this was the most tender lomo sandwich ever. Salmon baguette was a great mix of flavors,... More

Worth every penny we spent. Best meal we have had in Montevideo! Filet mignon was perfect! The fish was flavorful. Service was great! The chefs clearly put the time into your food, why do I say this, because you watch them prepare everything in front of you. We will keep going back.

Small place---truly "estrecho"=narrow--- where you sit at the bar facing a long kitchen. It was crowded with locals, but the service was great. If I had watched closely, I would have known how they made my meal! Food was great (fish, beef); and price very reasonable. They don't take credit cards though! Our cousins who live in Montevideo recommended this... More

Everything about this place is wonderful. The food, of course. But also good for entertainment value...the attention to detail of staff dedicated to their craft. And mushy peas ... in Montevideo!!! Who'd have thought it?!

Had a wonderful lunch here today. The place meets all expectations and lives up to its hype. We had the chicken thighs special which was moist, tender and oh so very tasty. The appetizer of pumpkin flowers stuffed with crab was light and perfectly crafted. It is VERY obvious that the chefs at El Estrecho take their craft very seriously.... More

I was in Montevideo for work, and a friend recommended this place to have lunch, so I headed for Ciudad Vieja full of expectations. It could well be that the dish of the day wasn´t spectacular. But I felt dissappointed. As is usually the case with contemporary cuisine and upbeat restaurants, the dish descriptions ran a few lines long. This... More

The food here is excellent contemporary cooking done by some young, vibrant chefs served by young friendly staff. When we arrived it was just after the peak time for lunch so it was quiet, but what I do remember well, which stood out for me, was that one of the clients was having a conversation with one of the chefs,... I enjoyed every bite. reasonably priced , the most tender fillet I ever had in my life . I believe there is no other seating besides the bar but the food was so good I can not even explain in words how good it was !

Steak salads in the US just don't measure up. The Uruguayans believe their beef is better than the Argentinians, and after tasting the four 5cm cubed cooked perfectly steak, that mixed well with the large amount of greens and dressing, I must agree. And the delicately fried quinoa salad my wife got with her excellent fish of the day, corvina,... More
