Everything about this place is wonderful. The food, of course. But also good for entertainment value...the attention to detail of staff dedicated to their craft. And mushy peas ... in Montevideo!!! Who'd have thought it?!

Had a wonderful lunch here today. The place meets all expectations and lives up to its hype. We had the chicken thighs special which was moist, tender and oh so very tasty. The appetizer of pumpkin flowers stuffed with crab was light and perfectly crafted. It is VERY obvious that the chefs at El Estrecho take their craft very seriously.... More

I was in Montevideo for work, and a friend recommended this place to have lunch, so I headed for Ciudad Vieja full of expectations. It could well be that the dish of the day wasn´t spectacular. But I felt dissappointed. As is usually the case with contemporary cuisine and upbeat restaurants, the dish descriptions ran a few lines long. This... More

The food here is excellent contemporary cooking done by some young, vibrant chefs served by young friendly staff. When we arrived it was just after the peak time for lunch so it was quiet, but what I do remember well, which stood out for me, was that one of the clients was having a conversation with one of the chefs,... I enjoyed every bite. reasonably priced , the most tender fillet I ever had in my life . I believe there is no other seating besides the bar but the food was so good I can not even explain in words how good it was !

Steak salads in the US just don't measure up. The Uruguayans believe their beef is better than the Argentinians, and after tasting the four 5cm cubed cooked perfectly steak, that mixed well with the large amount of greens and dressing, I must agree. And the delicately fried quinoa salad my wife got with her excellent fish of the day, corvina,... More

I visited for lunch on a weekday afternoon at 12pm and had no problem getting a seat; however, by 12:45pm, the place was almost full. There are no tables, only seats at a long bar, which overlooks the kitchen, so you can watch as your meal is being prepared. I ordered the filet mignon which came with mashed potatoes (UYU... More

This a tiny spot right on the main pedestrian thoroughfare in old town Montevideo. You have to pay attention or may just pass it up. The food is fantastic and the staff is very friendly and attentive. The owner himself will make the rounds and come speak to you about what they are serving and to ensure you are satisfied.... More

We lived in Montevideo for three months, and Estrecho is the BEST restaurant by far. The food is creative, delicious, and beautifully presented. The staff are wonderful -- warm, professional, efficient. It's open only for lunch (I think from noon to 4:00) and if you arrive during the lunch crunch you might have to wait -- it's so worth waiting!... More
