Eat like the Locals

My wife and I really enjoyed this place. Nothing fancy but real good food and a lot of it. Our excellent waiter was a young student and he said he just started English class. We had fun talking both my limited Spanish and his better English. Food was very fresh and tasty. Prices were very... read more

I haven't eaten a lot of foods here, but it is known for having the best cake -- particularly chocolate cake -- in Iquitos. I can attest that that is true after going there many times to get a piece or two to take back to my hotel for a late night or afternoon snack. It is delicious.

It hits you as you walk through the open doors - a horrible rancid smell of garbage. I was almost sick from the smell. You would think a chicken roasting restaurant would have a wonderful roast meat smell, but not at El Pollon. There were piles of garbage bags, the floors were filthy dirty. The whole place needed an extreme... More

Basic fried food, roasted chicken and hamburgers. They offer good fried banana slides. The potato chips are quite not so crunchy.

I'm usually a vegetarian but my friends wanted chicken and for once I broke down. Very tasty and authentic.

Great nice-spiced, roasted chicken and terrific fries. What more needs to be said? The fruit drinks looked good too!

What a smell coming out of that place! I thought for just a minute it would be nice to try some of their chicken. I don't know if they do not clean their kitchen or garbage cans but there must be some endemic bacteria there because I have never smelled something so rancid wafting out of a restaurant

The restaurant is right on the Plaza de Armas and has the typical Peruvian dish - pollo a la brasa (rotisserie chicken) served with fries, fried banana or rice. They also have an extensive menu (with some interesting English translations :) ), but when the restaurant is called "El Pollón" (the big chicken), it's best to go with the chicken.... More

This chicken house sits directly across from the main plaza. Over the years, I see less and less tourists in there as there are some better than average places popping up in the same area, but I used to eat there all the time. Good enough, cheap, fast. In the center of the plaza activity.

There is nothing good or bad at the El Pollon. It is just like every other chaufa place. Chicken and Rice....they do it.
