Peranakan food at reasonable price

This is our go to place when we had foreign guests who want to try out Peranakan food. Dishes to try are Ayam Buah Keluak, Ngoh Hiang(non spicy) and the assam fish. Prices are not to bad and the service is friendly.

I love food. My friends love food. We eat a lot and search for delicious foods. We read about this place being authentic and delicious. We felt we just had to travel all the way there to eat it. We drove from the west of the island all the way to the east just for it. The ambience is casual,... More

Visited with a family friend and enjoyed a delicious Peranakan meal. All the dishes were authentic and tasted just the way my grandmother used to make. The otak was very good. I'll be back for another round next year.

Tried out Guan Hoe Soon as was craving for some Perankan food , ordered a Ayam Buak keluak it tasted good but didn't find the babi pong the any good as the pork was tough and dry and didn't really enjoy that dish. Other than that , the pickles with chilli was quite a nice appetizer. If you are around... More

They have moved to 38/40 Joo Chiat Place, with a dinning area for more than a hundred diners. Interior decoration looks temporary and zen. The kitchen and dinning areas are separated by a curtain instead of wall. We sit next to the curtain and was amused by the sound and action from the kitchen! The Ayam Buah Keluak is delicious... Great Singaporean (Peranakan) food. Some dishes are really great, and some are just okay. I would recommend their fish (ikan chuan chuan) and seafood dishes (crab foo yong), as they way they taste better than other Perannakan foods. You can tell that they really put their effort and love into their food. All dishes are nicely arranged, and service is... More

After they moved to Joo Chiat Place, tried them again. A cozy little place with a down-to-earth, family feeling. Great food, good service

Not being a Singaporean, I have to rely on my memory of many years ago to compare the food here. I enjoyed the Crab Foo Yung, certainly not a simple omelet. The dish my wife chose however, Ginger Fish, was very mediocre. Beer I thought expensive even for Singapore at over SGD7 a glass (incl GST), and I wasn't impressed... More

To me, this is way better than the chilli Padi restaurant opposite ..My mom is Peranakan and having grown up on authentic cuisine, this is as good as it gets as a commercial establishment .. Maybe a miss in one or teo dishes, but I'd put that down to preferences in taste. Save some space for desert - the chendol... More

Staying in Joo Chiat

Neighborhood Profile
Joo Chiat
The Joo Chiat area is the traditional home of Peranakan culture in Singapore, an ethnic group descending from the blending of Chinese and Malay families in the 15th century. The neighborhood is packed with colorful shops, local characters, and quiet charm. The main streets overflow with diners enjoying katong laksa, the signature Peranakan spicy noodle soup. Signs of youthful entrepreneurship are visible as well, with modern cafes, bars, and shops abounding. Visit Joo Chiat to take a break from the big city sights and enjoy a relaxing afternoon with a laid-back and local vibe.
