Good tmosphere with reasonable food

Interesting panelled room with good service and food. Certainly possible to spend a lot on the specials, but there was plenty of good choice of dishes around the hk$100 levels - so a reasonably priced dinner in a prime Wan Chai location.

The American has been in HK for about 50 years (previously on the opposite side of the road). It used to be the top Chinese restaurant for expatriates and tourists. However, the food and the service went downhill nearly 20 years ago. My wife and myself and most of our friends stopped going there when a wider choice of good... More

You must approach this restaurant with an open mind. Expect surly waiters and average but good value food and you will not be disappointed. It is just as I remembered it from years ago. Portions are also very good, so be careful when ordering!! We had a waiter who just looked at us pityingly and said 'Too much' and advised... More

Very average old fashioned HK but without the quality. We went out of our way to try their dried chilli beef but it was not good. No crispness and little flavour. It's meant to be famous for that dish.

I've been a few times. This week I was back in HK and just had to go again. The truth is that its now possible to get good Peking Duck in many cities of the world. But when I am in HK I always visit the American.

Hands down, I love this place. It's so local, staff are old-timers that are English-speaking and no-nonsense, the dishes come in SML sizes and the menu is extensive! So it's not the best food in town but the experience will make up for it. Beware that the noise level in this place can get very high.

Really good food in generous portions! Well cooked and very tasty. The service was attentive but not friendly. Table cloths and hand towels were stained and gave an unhygienic impression. The aircon was blowing icy winds, so we had to leave before we was finished because we were freezing...

Don't get fooled by it's name, this is NOT an American food place. This is what I have found to be a typical Chinese restaurant. Great Chinese food, Very good and unique service. Great price-value. Best Peking style duck I have ever had. The waiter (maybe the owner/house comedian) made like he wouldn't let us order the duck at first.... More

Staying in Wan Chai / Causeway Bay

Neighborhood Profile
Wan Chai / Causeway Bay
Wan Chai and Causeway Bay are the retail centers of Hong Kong Island. Filled with shops, malls and restaurants, both areas are bustling with people – tourists and locals alike. Causeway Bay has one of the highest rents on the planet, and is a bit more polished and modern than its Wan Chai counterpart. Beneath the surface there is more than meets the eye – find boutique stores in the above ground floors of buildings and wander into side streets to find interesting restaurants and shops tucked away from the main roads. Wan Chai especially has experienced a modern revival in recent times, with an influx of trendy restaurants and bars around the Star Street area. In addition, both areas contain many of Hong Kong’s iconic tourist attractions worthy of your visit.
