It was 16 years between visits and little had changed, which is unusual in Hong Kong. The duck is the main event and fed 4 hungry males, with cold beers for 700hk $$$. Heaps of yummy pancakes to wrap the tender duck pieces. Soup followed made from the duck carcass. Yum. The service was efficient-not really grumpy. My visitors loved... More

We got a HK friend to help us make a booking for dinner. The walk along Lockhart Road past the girlie bars and working girls (mainly Filipinos) was an experience itself before we found the restaurant. It is called American Restaurant but it is all Cantonese inside. For just the 3 of us, we ordered the famed roast Peking Duck... More

Always a great meal at The American, but I'm now starting to realise its a genuine tourist attraction too. Good food, fast service, great atmosphere. Value for money.

local, lively and very old Hong Kong. The crispy duck was wonderfully undercooked compared to the western version and the sweet and sour shrimps were stunning. Service was fine - not at all grumpy and the huge tables full of locals toasting each other , each time more enthusiastic gave it a fun atmosphere - we were upstairs which we... More

Been reading some of the reviews of this restaurant and having lived in HK from 1979-1983 I returned in 2013 and was delighted to see that little had changed. The waiters were renowned for being grumpy but that was part of the fun - it was always buzzing , the food was always good and it was well priced. I... More

I actually dont know why its called American Restaurant. We ate Peking Duck there and it was ok. The restaurant has no windows as far I remember. The service was ok. The waiter made some weird spitting sounds when running around the restaurant, what was kind of funny. The menu was dirty with all kind of different foods sticking in... More

This is an old family favourite and come back every time we are in HK. Favourite dishes are dried shredded beef, chicken and cashews and sizzling beef. Special mention to Andy who really made our visits special - great service from him and great sense of humour! We will be back again when we return from HK.

I spent 3 months in HK and found only a handful of restaurants that I'd go back to. This was one of them. Don't get me wrong, I'm no meat n two veg Luddite, but I do like to know what it is I'm eating. Every visit was a challenge but never a disappointment. I loved the waiters telling two... More

Yes, the waiters are older guys and because it's expected you have a laugh. Overall though the service is good. Four of us for lunch. Ordered the garlic beans which was very good. That was followed by Sichuan prawns also very good. Fried scallops and squid (fried in this case meant stir fried apparently) which was average and then a... More

Had a great night at the American. Proper old school place with white table cloths and bright white lighting. Service by the old waiters was entertaining and they were very friendly - they're not exactly gushing but they constantly made sure we were looked after. In fact I think in all the restaurants I have been to around the world... More
