Understated excellence

Vegetarian or not vegetarian is not a consideration for me. I do not go out seeking vegetarian food. So, when my wife and I met our friend for lunch at King's Joy we were looking for a place to eat and enjoy each other's company. We loved the food options, but we were served in a seeming random order, and waiters brought us dessert before the main course. We had a little trouble communicating, and while the iPad photos were lovely, ordering was a little tricky. That said, it was a great option for vegetarians.

It is quiet some time ago I wisited this place, however I keep thinking back in it as the best meal I have had on any restaurant here in China. Let me tell of when I was there, we arrived as a group of 6, just walking by searching for some food. Sudenly one of us rechogognices the name as... More

I needed to find a vegetarian restaurant to take the husband's boss to. On a friend's recommendation we booked King's Joy and it was one of the best meals we gave had in Beijing. The food was really tasty and not drowned in oil as so much Chinese food is. The service was excellent as was the ambience. There's a... More

I wasn't aware that the restaurant was a vegetarian until I saw the menu. Beautiful surroundings with 2 harpists playing lovely music. The menu is all on a tablet and choices are made thereon. Some dishes I had never heard of. Exquisitely presented by charming staff, the food was really tasty and I left very satisfied. Suitable for business, couples... More

Some local colleagues recommended this restaurant and after the realisation that it is 100% vegetarian (and the panic that ensued) I really enjoyed it. Great atmosphere (even the 'Harpist' - is that the correct term?? - was enjoyable). Dishes that you couldn't never have ever contemplated that were sensational (the menu is an iPad, with Photos & English) and the... More

One of the most beautiful restaurants I have seen. There is a spacious parking, which is necessary in this area. The entrance makes an instant wow. Amazing bar and outside dining area. The restrooms are also surprising and immaculate. The menu is on a tablet, whimsical but not always comfortable. The English translation of the dishes could use some work,... More

This was a delicious dinner! It wasn't cheap but it was very very good! My food experiences are mainly from Melbourne and Hong Kong so I can't comment on how expensive it was or wasn't. For my mum and I it came to around 1200HKD which I would expect to pay for a similar experience in HK and Australia so... More

This is one of the most memorable meals I've had - anywhere in the world. King's Joy serves gourmet vegetarian food in a sophisticated, modern but utterly Chinese setting. None of our party of five were vegetarians, and I could see my guests' hearts sink slightly when I said we were going to a vegetarian restaurant for dinner - however... More

The setting is stunning but the positives for me ended there. Poor communication by the waiter meant we were led to believe that we were only allowed to order one of the set menus which were not particularly appealing. There were occasional plus points with the flavours of the dishes but overall the food was very bland and lacking in... More
