Dumplings in the Hutong

We were taking a stroll in the hutongs and stumbled upon the restaurant towards the end of the walk. While the restraurant is not easy to find, there was an ample selection of dumplings on offer. We had lunch there and enjoyed the freshly made dumplings with a local beer. For starters, go for one... read more

There are some positives about this restaurant but I felt that the overall atmosphere and the price of the dumplings did not lead to the eating experience that I had expected. Having lived in China for four years, I have eaten a good number of dumplings and the cheap ones on the university campus where I have been working are... More

I am an expat living in Beijing. This city is paradise on earth for food lovers (and I'm French...), Beijing is quite simply the best place on earth if you love to eat out and experience somethings different every single day of the year. I'm open minded, i love Duck de Chine (haut de gamme) and I also love a... More

I've been to both locations of Mr Shi's dumplings and found both experiences mediocre. I've had dumplings in other places in Beijing and, in comparison, this place isn't anything special. OK, so there are tons of choices and it's well known, but most of the choices aren't authentic (I've never seen cheese in dumplings elsewhere) and it's mostly overrated by... More

To be frank, location was really hard to find. It was located along the hutong street where you have to walk through a few alleys to get to this main street. We had the help of GPS to guide us along and know abit of chinese, so we could get ourselves around. Hence, it be good to really map out... More

I had dinner one night and then lunch and dinner the next. OK I didn't have breakfast with Mr. Shi. Given the large number of restaurants in the area it says a lot that I ate here over and over. The beef and shiitake mushroom dumplings I had all three meals. I had a total of 6 different dumplings. I... More

The food is top notch, this place is a must for all visitors. The walls and tables are covered in money and messages from all ends of the earth. The staff make the dumplings in from of you, try to make them is healthly as they can and always helpful. They speak some English but if you get stuck, there... More

When your hotel is across the street from Mr. Shi's you will eat there a lot and you likely will never be disappointed. One of life's great moments involved a plate of Mr. Shi's dumplings and 2 cold beers. The location as well is cool and the whole area has lots going on. It earns its reputation.

Still largely unknown to tourist but hugely popular with locals and expats alike, Mr Shi's has some of the best dumplings in Beijing. Located down a hutong near the Drum and Bell Towers, it's a great place to go for some good food and beer before hitting the crowded Nanluoguxiang area. Order the beef and mushroom dumplings, or any of... More

Had heard a lot of good reviews and so decided to go there. It is located in an alley way so take a map with exact location. It is a small place like a cafe. menu was in english. we ordered combination of steamed and fried dumplings. First the waiter got the order wrong so we sent back the plates.... More
