I wanted to have a nice meal on my brief trip to Beijing last week, and read the great reviews about The Black Sesame Kitchen on Trip Advisor! So, I emailed the restaurant to request a reservation. Coco promptly responded, and sent detailed directions to the location, along with confirmation for the reservation. The Taxi delivered us to the Hutong... More

We only discovered the Black Sesame because we were staying at the Orchid Gulou (see my separate review). On checking in to the hotel we were told that the restaurant used by the Orchid for breakfast and for its Thursday evening dumpling classes was used on other nights by Black Sesame. It was explained that this was a 10-course meal,... More

We had an excellent dinner. We picked up this place from Tripadvisor. Yes it is difficult to find, but when you are in the right hutong, call them. The whole menu was excellent, tasty vegetables, spicy meat, and extra good dessert. In addition to all this we had a young couple from Frisco joining us. We had a very enjoyable... More

Black Sesame Kitchen was our favorite restaurant in China. The experience was wonderful on all fronts! The atmosphere of the place is excellent and it is so fun/informative to see the food being prepared. Coco our hostess was a delight! She was so friendly and attentive and it made the experience great. Our dinner companions were excellent to eat and... More

Though the al fresco dining is nice, BSK used to be all about the experience: the smoky kitchen, watching the cooks prepare the dishes, the blackboard with the night's menu...that's all gone. The food is good but not extraordinary, portions could be larger. We had 3 vegetarians and they didn't get much in lieu of the pork/beef/chicken dishes...at the old... More

It will take some doing to find this gem (for starters, the address given on TripAdvisor is wrong: it's no. 65 Baochao Hutong, above The Orchid, a boutique hotel, 200 meters north of Gulou E. Street, down a narrow alley opposite Mr. Shi's Dumplings); but it's more than worth the effort. Not only is the 10-course tasting menu inventively and... More

small restaurant with a fixed, 10 course menu. You share the large table with other guests which is amusing. All courses are delicious, fresh, real Chinese but "frindly" to non-Chinese visitors! Table is close to the kicthen and gives the opportunity to study the chef. Coco is the perfect hostess. Reservation recommendended. Not easy to find, but with the directions... More

It deserves all it plaudits. All the people at our communal meal had been recommended it by friends and relatives, in our case by our daughter. If you visit Beijing and miss this then you are really missing out
