After the Great Wall we stopped off at the Schoolhouse Restaurant for lunch, the food was excellent, very fresh and tasty, excellent menu, best to book in advance as every table was full all the time. There is a roof top table area which overlooks the main dining area. All staff were very friendly. There was also a great glass... More

Spent a fantastic day at the Great Wall with our family of 5...stopped at The Schoolhouse for lunch. Fresh salads, pasta and chicken & fries. They also had a lot of Asian offerings. Kids loved it!

We were lucky to make reservations at the School House the same day Michelle Obama was there. The presentation to us by the owners, was a great story of success by these four "foreigners".

Dear Tom, Thank you so much for your encouragement. We know the security for Mrs. Obama impacted everyone around Mutianyu the day you came and all of us appreciated the good humor of our other guests. Wishing you safe and happy adventures -- All Four Partners (Jim, Julie, Liang, and Peiming) More

An oasis of organic food attracts intelligent western visitors to the Great Wall seeking a reliable lunch 5-10 minutes away from the GW parking lot. The restaurant was spotless a few days after a visit by the American First Lady and daughters. A welcoming notice proudly proclaimed that the distinguished visitors had consumed the house specialty noodles and pork bellies.... More

Dear spencerusa, Thank you for reviewing The Schoolhouse. Sometimes our local team gets the English a little off -- such as the pork "bellies" you mentioned -- and we don't catch it in time. But I'm glad to know that you did enjoy the food you tried here. We really appreciate the recommendation for us from a top contributor to... More

Our tour guide brought us here for lunch before going to the Great Wall. The food was a pleasant surprise - the ingredients were fresh and healthy and the meal itself was filling. I had the salad to start, and my husband has the soup. Both were delicious and you could taste the fresh ingredients. We had the lamb stew... More

There are a few restaurants and hotel/hostels near Mutianyu, but the Schoolhouse is the best one to me. It was own and manage by westerner, more friendly, less culture barrier. Not sure if Ms. Obama go there for her China trip, but she should be there, lol.

Dear Robert j, Thank you so much for your review. Mrs. Obama DID have a lunch at The Schoolhouse, along with her mother and two daughters. It was a big honor and a big challenge for our team. Of course we try to treat every single guest who comes in our door as a VVIP. Wishing you safe travels, Jim... More

We spent last Chinese New Year (2013) at the Brickhouse in Mutianyu (the sister place to the SchoolHouse) and we tramped around the local countryside - a beautiful area - rock hills, sparse forests (and of course the Great Wall) all covered with a blanket of snow. We decided one day to have lunch at the Schoolhouse - what a... More

Dear Ben N, It's really great for our restaurant team to get a review from "hometown" visitors from Beijing like you. The trout we serve is from the neighboring village and lives in fast-moving clean water from the mountains -- glad to know you enjoyed it. I hope you'll come again and try some of our new dishes and package... More

Delicious lunch after visiting the wall. Fresh mushroom soup and grilled veggie sandwich on a very fresh baguette. Great service with. Smile - some of the tastiest food we ate in china!

concept is good but so overpriced even for Beijing and taste not really good. Kind of one of the only place around Mutianyu to have a drink or coffee after a hike so ok to go there but don't get your hopes up. good environment but you re better off bringing a Picnic and just grab a drink there.

Dear TimandYuki, I am so sorry that The Schoolhouse was not to your taste.
