Great restaurant specializing in "juk" (rice porridge

While staying at the Plaza for a few weeks, I wanted to avoid the $55 hotel buffet and eat something a little more local. I had eaten juk (rice porridge with several bowls of fixings - known as 'congee' in China) at another place a few times, but then the hotel concierge gave me a recommendation to... read more

I was with my two-year-old daughter and decided to try this restaurant for breakfast one morning as it was near our hotel. The only English review before mine helped me locate the restaurant and I used Google map street view to look for the 'pink pig' near the restaurant. It is a small but quaint little place. The menu with... More

I did not feel like having an American buffet breakfast at the hotel on a rainy Sunday morning and remembered this little place from years ago. Unfortunately, all the reviews were in Japanese and I had to wonder around to to find this tiny restaurant in an alley behind the Plaza Hotel, not the one with Duncan Donuts but the... More

Staying in Myeongdong / Namdaemun

Neighborhood Profile
Myeongdong / Namdaemun
Arguably Seoul’s most famous neighborhood and undoubtedly one of its most popular, Myeongdong takes shopping and eating to new heights, with hundreds of shops, restaurants, and cafes all stacked on top of one another. The rise in popularity of Korean cosmetics, fashion, and more has made this area a must-see for visitors who come and marvel at Myeongdong’s often frenetic pace and energy. Lotte and Shinsaegae’s massive department stores are also popular draws for both Korean and luxury products. The department stores, just like Myeongdong’s streets, are crowded around the clock. Myeongdong’s many street food carts are also immensely popular for their inexpensive and quirky offerings (French-fry-encrusted corn dogs, anyone?). The neighborhood’s popularity, as well as its close proximity to other popular sights and neighborhoods, makes it one of Seoul’s most popular places to stay.
